Rose Funnies
Comments (45)Just back from discovering the local nursery has it's rose field open. There was a guy that was giving the staff a hard time, demanding that he needed a 15g Don Juan on a trellis. The idea that they grow and train the roses themselves and did not register. He kept saying "Well call some one up and order one". They told him several times "there is no one to order that rose from, we grow the ones you see here and we would have to pay more than we could sell it for if we found one, but we can start you one for next season" . (they have a large lot and have many roses that are rather old or unusual from the box store selections (like a 60" standard Renae) That was one unhappy customer!...See MorePoll: do you a)fertilize, b)compost, c) none of the above?
Comments (35)PM2, your garden is so neat and tidy and welcoming! Geez, everyone here is not only more organized on paper than I am, but neater and more organized in the garden! I keep telling myself that since I'm not selling at the market this year I'll have more time to focus on aesthetics. My veggies garden is also growing shadier by the year. Again, because of not selling this year, I should have some more sunny areas to give over to veggies, but I am a flower gardener at heart, so we'll see how that turns out! CMK, honestly, I never ever had a problem with vetch getting away from me. Yes, if I didn't turn it under by the right time, it did grow and really cover that particular bed, but it has never "taken over" the garden or even reseeded much. Every now and then I see a tiny vetch vine or seedling in a nearby bed, but a quick tug takes care of that - unless I want it in that bed and I leave it there on purpose. And that one vine never really does much, so its not really much help anyway. I've never added phosphorus, but I'm really bad at any kind of balancing - I keep meaning to get a soil test, but you can guess how that turned out! So I just keep adding my llama manure, compost, cover crops, and leaves. Campanula, sorry to hear about the horse manure problem. And I hear you and Cactus Joe about never seeming to make enough compost! I have been thinking of getting chickens, but one of my main concerns is that they will take away from the stuff now going into the compost bins, lol! Love the squirrel, PM2! Well, actually, I don't like squirrels (is there a gardener who really does?) but that photo is too funny. Looks like someone got caught with his hand (paw?) in the cookie jar, lol. Comments (31)This is a great topic, I have really enjoyed reading the posts. When we moved into this home a little over 20 years ago the three front east to south facing windows begged for houseplants and through the first three or so years I collected every one I could get my hands on. Gardening was pretty much a waste of time becuase the run off water from the steets made our yard a mud hole or skating rink depending on the season. When my husband got that problem solved my intrest strayed to the outside and gardening. I love plants, I love to grow them. As my gardens outside grew my houseplants dwindled down to nothing. Once I got a handle on the outside gardening I started growing african violets....ending up with over 300. Through the winter this was great but come spring time and gardening time the violets suffered. I finally got rid of all but about 20 violets and only have those because of how tough they are to survive my neglect (btw...wick watering is the answer to violets thriving). Within the past year my house plant collection has started to grow again. DH built me a wonderful sunroom...it isn't completely finished yet but is fully functional and I just seem to be getting more and more plants. Some, like my miniature rose bush, the carnations I started from slips out of a bouquet, the hydrangea stem I rooted and my basket of hanging carnations are plants that were outside. I couldn't lose them to the cold. The rest are just things that "followed me home". It's nice to have plants inside again. I probably will from now on. Comments (21)Yes, I do think it would be fine for valances. In fact, I have used another Kaufmann print called 'Ottomani' with elephants on it for valances in my bedroom that is the same scale. I typically use 1 to 1 1/4 yards for each valance. The 54" width is perfect for your windows. You will need to order extra for matching the repeat from window to window, as well as for your pillows. If you look on Fabric Guru at the picture of the fabric with the ruler on it, you'll see that the pheasant print alternates with another of two different birds. You don't know where their 'cut' will start, so since it's so reasonable there, I'd personally order a minimum of 5 yards, since you need 3.75 for your valances, and you'll need extra for that to match prints, and then extra for your pillows. Sitting here looking at the fabric 'in person', and your stripe choices, to my eye, your first stripe fabric is the one I would use, given those choices....See MoreMrs. S
