Hi, I am a gardener and have done landscape maintenance for clients. I really enjoy designing succulent containers and would like to design and maintain these for clients/businesses. I am not sure what to charge for travel, time, and maintenance materials. Most of these are within a 3-5 mile radius. Any suggestions are greatly appreciated? Thank you!

I do container design as well as landscape design and charge my normal hourly design fee for both (that includes travel time). I am sometimes called upon to plant the containers and charge the same hourly rate for that as well, plus whatever costs for supplies and/or plants. I don't do any maintenance (other than an infrequent replanting). If I did, I would most likely charge that at a lower rate....perhaps 2/3 my design fees.

So essentially, time and materials :-)

If you're talking about big commercial growers, I think they usually make their own mixes from pine bark compost, peat and maybe perlite. I've read quite a number of studies of container growing in the nursery trade and noticed how often the mixes they use are bark based. My two favorite garden centers use mixes that are a lot like Al's 5-1-1. It's cheaper and holds up longer than standard peat based mixes.

low maintenance container flower plants?

I don't do anything special. I inherited these when I bought my townhouse 10 years ago. They were in one pot. I divided them in quarters after 2 years - gave Mom one of the sections. So that left me with three. I should have divided them last Spring - but didn't get around to it. This year, I noticed one of the pots was starting to crack so I KNEW I had to split them up. I have the ones in the cracked pot to my uncle - who planted them in the ground in his yard. The other 2 I split in half, So now I have 4 pots. New math... 3-1=4. LOL! Like I said - nothing special. Just water... and food (when I remember). They get full sun just about all day. The flowers themselves just bloom about a day or so. (They ARE "DAY" Lilies, after all) - but there are so many buds, there's always something open. I deadhead regularly so that keeps them going. I generally have 4 to 6 flowers on a stem.

2 feet might be deep enough to contain it, and your retainer needs to be above ground level so you can observe any rhizomes that try to escape on the surface. Once it does fill in it will continue to put up new culms, and yes the old ones die off as the plant matures. Water depends on what the weather has been doing, but certainly if it hasn't rained a nice deep watering weekly works nicely, or just water when your yard gets watered. If not maintained and properly contained it will become a nightmare to you and your neighbors! Do you also include time to travel to purchase supplies? I need to find a bulk supplier for soils, plants, etc. So I need to set an hourly rate. I really appreciate your input, thank you!

Yep!! Any time I spend specifically on client business gets charged to them.
