Oh, dear! Maybe some of these 'powder rooms' need a copy of the book my DS's psychiatrist SIL gives to young children. Title is: "Everybody Poops". Reminds me of an adventure a friend had while traveling by car in a rural area of Spain. She had some gastric distress and was in dire need. Her DH stopped in front of a modern home. My friend rang the bell. Lady-of-the-house answered. Friend asked if there was a 'bathroom' she could use. Lady proudly showed her three rooms with tubs and showers. Friend was dying. Finally the homeowner said, "Oh, you need the TOILET!" Time to take the pantaloons off the table legs, folks. The Victorian Era is O-V-E-R. Let's retire 'powder room' while we're at it.

I would go with ceramic tile if you have alot of muddy kids, or pets. I have new wood floors in my kitchen and I am now worried that it was a mistake there based on what I have seen at a few friends houses who have had the floors for a few years. Wood is not the most durable surface in a workspace. Another friend has dark blue and white checkerboard tiles in her kitchen and absolutely hates it. It shows every speck. I would get something with a more random pattern that looks like dirt! It won't show anything! I saw some beautiful porcelain tiles at Daltile that look like marble. Just beautiful and the grime would not be irritatingly noticeable. Slate might be great. It just needs more upkeep, sealing it periodically.

I love planning spaces so I took some time and drew up three ideas for you. This was my first idea, with the thought that it would be nice to have the most used room at the forefront. But soon realized you'd have a larger folding area if you used the top of your washer and dryer for folding so I made a few changes utilizing the last photo GeoKid shared as inspiration. Then it dawned on me that having the two sinks basically side by side and the fact that moving the toilet would be costly I thought I should remove the bathroom sink and use a double sink with a large deep side for soaking and small shallow side for washing hands when something is soaking. This last one is my favorite. Even though it doesn't give you two separate rooms I feel, because of the W/D being hidden you get the best use of the space without having the added cost of moving too much of the plumbing and electrical. We have this in our master bed and bath. It is porcelain tile. The reason I thought of it for your mudroom is because it is not one-teeny bit slippery when wet. I get out of the shower every day and walk dripping wet all over it. Never wipe up the water and minutes later you can't see anything. I steam mop it once a week. Great, great floor. Wish I had it all over the house. It is 18" square tile, Fondovalde from Italy. African Blue (I 50C 2H). It comes in various sizes and a couple of other colors.
