Can one stain 'New' Red Oak to match 'Old' Red Oak?
Comments (16)"Can one stain 'New' Red Oak to match 'Old' Red Oak?" This is tuff to do. When we do a repair in an old Vancouver Home I often use some Shellac first and then top coat with Polyurethane. The shellac gives me the aged look or yellowing and the two seam to work well together. Some times we tint the top coat a little. Judgement calls since sunlight and time will yellow the top coat so making it look right now might make it look wrong in a year........See MoreMaple Natural Stained Cabinets & Golden Oak Floors...Keep, or Not
Comments (3)I still (hanging my head, shame faced) don't know how to upload photos. But I will get someone to help me and post a few. Would be best to take them in daylight. fori, having taken part in DD's reno I do know how labor intenstive it is to paint cabinets properly. DD & SIL painted them in his Dad's home and later in their own. They have a large garage space (w/ heat) & a good sprayer. I helped with the priming, sanding, & poly stages with the ones for their home. Lots of steps & drying time between but the results were so worth it. I know I'll go bananas during the process, having everything out of order. But I could get through that. I just have to decide if a change is in order. I'm so used to seeing it as it is, I can't be objective. That's why I'd like opinions from the folks here....See MoreRefinishing golden/honey oak cabinets to a gray stain
Comments (19)eam44, she did in her first post, which is eerily similar to the image nosoccermom just posted! Keep in mind that anything wax really needs to be sealed, no matter what these blogs claim. Wax come off with Windex (anything ammonia) and even vinegar, for those who think that's the way to go. It's NOT good in bathrooms or kitchens. Or outside, for that matter. There's a whole "revolution" of heresy among bloggers who regret selling their stuff with such non-durable finishes. Looks great, but lasting? Particularly for families with children? HAHAHAHHAHHAHA I find the efforts addicted2decorating when through totally unnecessary. Notice she took it down to no finish. I simply used gray stain, whereas she worked her @ss off. Citristrip doesn't require sanding, nor does wiping stain off. Go figure. (I like her blog, though.)...See Morerefinishing and mixing new red oak-natural or golden oak?
Comments (15)So, does this mean you have to have a new kitchen floor laid? The color looks good. In your first pictures, I preferred the lightest color, then the next lightest. I thought the dark one looked like a "wanna be walnut, but I'm oak". I have a prefinished oak flooring in natural that I have had for 10 years and I love it. Its by Mirage. I appreciate the light fresh look with my rooms. I had to have it reinstalled because the subcontracted installer banged up every nail insertion, because he must have had a damaged nailer. The owner of the flooring company came out the the flooring rep from Mirage, and they determined it was installation error. The finish was warrantied for something like 30 Years (can't remember the number) but with all the nicks, it wouldn't last. New install was great and the floor has been very good to me :) I'm getting it again soon in my bedroom, using a different installer company. All this to say I love my light flooring. It is fresh and can go modern or traditional, imho....See MoreKR Kitchen Remodeling, LLC
