Shower Window Needs to be Waterproofed
Comments (7)Hmmm. The window needs replaced because it's very old and extremely drafty. I had considered glass block because I thought it would be easier to waterproof, and I thought it would give us some privacy. (It's a first floor bathroom, and it's right across from the neighbor's kitchen. Terrible place for a window!) I thought we could get one that has an opening so that we can vent the room. We don't have an actual vent in the room, and having one installed isn't really in the budget. Maybe I should reconsider the type of window. Having a good amount of natural light is important, and so is being able to have a breeze during those wonderful Spring and Autumn days. Also, I think I read somewhere that glass block isn't great for keeping out the cold during winter. I had sort of assumed that glass block was very energy efficient. But I'm a beginner....See MoreTile experts - I need your waterproofing advice!
Comments (17)A properly designed curbless shower DOES contain the water! The important part is "properly designed". The best waterproofing that exists can be all for nothing if the shower underneath it is improperly built. That goes for curbed or curbless. Be sure the pre-slope is correct, and correct for the materials chosen. Be sure the interface with the drain is correct, and no weep holes are blocked. Be sure the curb is built correctly, and detailed correctly. The details Behind the waterproofing are just as important as the waterproofing. And the framing behind those details is included in those things that not enough people pay attention to, until it is too late, and they have a wavy tile installation because the walls were framed poorly. You won't be using any contrasting grout with wavy walls!...See MoreNeed professional advice for hiding plumbing in master bath
Comments (45)Here is what I would do... Keep it about 1" off the ceiling and leave a gap to get light above the fixture to make it look like a feature. Play with the gap between the face board and the angled board until you have a bit of light coming from the top but not too much. You will not be able to see the line set and plumbing pipe unless you are 8' tall. Use some reflective material or mirror effect paint on the angled board to redirect more light down. Use integrated LED tube lights for the light source and attach it to the face board or very high on the silver surface to really hide the tube from below. This is really not an elegant solution but if done correctly it will hide the problem in something that looks like a rational and intentional design decision....See MoreHelp! Contractor did not put waterproofing under shower floor
Comments (39)@Nona Muss - I understand exactly what you’re going through. My first contractor didn’t do a pre slope under the pvc liner on shower floor. We got that addressed - and then he decided to not use any of the three bags of white thinset (he purchased) to install the carrara tile on the shower walls - but instead used mastic ”because it was faster.” When we pushed the issue, he packed up and left. The second contractor (with over 200 4.9 star Google reviews) sent over his “business partner” to bid the work. His “business partner“ then said that he felt so bad for me re: every thing that had happened with the first contractor (including needing to rip out the slate bathroom floor bc several pieces failed to bond), that he would start the work himself ASAP + work over the upcoming weekend. Well, it turns out that he wasn’t a “business partner” - but a new employee. He produced fraudulent receipts for materials (that I reimbursed upon recipt per contract) - and stopped showing up. I did a quick background check and discovered that he had been in prison for over nine years for aggravated battery + fraud charges (had been out for 18 months). I asked the owner about whether he had done a background check - he told me that he hadn’t run it yet. After I told him about the results of the background check I did, the owner asked me if I noticed the scar on the guy’s upper arm - and then told me that when he asked the employee about it, he said it was from “being shot by a cop.” I swear I am not making this up. He also stole some jewelry from me. Third contractor - great guy - had just started work - and then was sentenced to 90 days in jail related to a third DUI conviction. My fourth (and final) contractor is AMAZING. The third and fourth ones are both TCNA certified - I didn’t hire the first or second one - my SO did. Although I don’t blame him for what happened. My SO had glowing references from two of his law partners who had used the first guy for several projects + did research on the second one (who was the second highest bid out of five). I thought that by now I would have not only finished two bathroom renovations - but also my laundry room + kitchen reno (which is close to starting FINALLY). I actually wish I had never even begun - my bathrooms were fine - just a little dated....See MoreKristin Petro Interiors, Inc.
