need home office help!

I’ve rearranged my furniture (again...) and bought new chairs for our home office. I grabbed the rug from another room and thought it looked good in person until I took photos, and clearly it’s a lot... so going to find a simpler rug.
I Have a few questions -
How do you approach a footstool for two side chairs ? One longer one or two small ones? I’m going to take the black one out once I find one.

And how to approach the side table issue - my husband does all his work from the chair so it’s constantly cluttered with books (and his hideous lamp!) lol and pens and such. - I need something that looks good but is useful for him to actually keep his stuff in/on.

Hi Diana!

What a nice space to have for an office! I love the floors, windows, and wainscoting.

For the chairs as you have them arranged, I would look for a round ottoman, personally. Separate footstools would need to be fairly small to avoid a crowd of furniture. If you want a longer footstool, you might look for one that incorporates storage as well, approaching it more like a coffee table.

Hopefully I’m interpreting correctly- is the white lamp to the right of the chair the hideous one? (Do they come in black?) And is the diamond-patterned rug the one you’d like to replace?

As for the side table storage. Could you use bookshelves instead? Books can go on the shelves, and you might use baskets to store smaller things. A more open storage solution might be easier to use. (If you and your husband want to dig more into organizational storage, I highly recommend “Organizing from the Inside-Out” by Julie Morganstern.”)

I’ll look into how a round one looks. I had looked up some smaller rectangular ones; I think one that looks like a longer bench would be odd in the space. But a round one with a bottom shelf would be cute actually!
Yes the white lamp. Will see if it comes in a different color. He just likes a lot of light.
Yes for the diamond rug. I thought it looked good but as I’m looking at the photos it looks super busy in there.
I am also keen on removing either that white console or the desk, as we don’t use the desk much.

I would take advantage of the bookcases and incorporate your desk there, so there is more open space. Bookcases could go on a side wall or opposite his desk, depending on room’s configuration. May even be able to add a comfy chair and large art, as you will have an empty wall

As mentioned above, measure space and I think you may want a settee for its back support vs a bench. Decide on an armless style or not, length, and the color and then start your search. If not shopping in person, be sure to read reviews around comfort and durability

I like the arrangement with the desk under the window, facing into the room. That leaves room for a long console with enclosed cabinets and shelves on the wall under the tv for your printer and other storage. You can go as long as you want on the console. You have enough room to move your rug all the way under the chairs so the console can sit on the floor.

Start with a room or two. It's overwhelming for you and anyone offering advice with this many spaces. I'll give you a starting point for the first two rooms. Your inspirations are both light, bright, with whites, beiges, and textures, so keep that in mind when you're decorating. Remove everything from the rooms, and add back only what is functional and meets that criteria. Eliminate the dark green rug in the first photo, and the red drapes in the second room. Replace the drapes with woven wood or white shades. Just those small changes will have a big impact.

It’s a great room, just has too much stuff. The main desk is nice! The open shelves don’t work. Start by removing all the books and items that do not get used. See what you have left. You need a spot for your printer/scanner and storage for paper etc. ideally the printer would be on top of a unit where you can store reams of paper, printer ink, etc. Maybe the white cabinet? I would replace the open shelves with closed storage to house the items you are keeping. Your husband only needs one chair. Two is too many for that spot. He needs a secretary type desk with a drop down top to contain all his stuff, then he just closes it up when he is done. Attached is a picture of a possible desk. When I am done for the day, I slide my laptop back and close it up and my office is neat as a pin.

Thanks! I would looove to put all those books away but what my husband really wants is a classic library with floor to ceiling bookshelves filled with books... like this :-( which is not great for my clutter free idea...

so I’m trying to minimize that a little... hehe.
I have to go through those shelves and organize by color, make things a little more uniform and easier on the eyes.

We both sit in those chairs so keeping them both. I’m going to get rid of either the desk or that white console thing. I like the idea of the secretary desk and closed shelving but not ready to do a whole re-do of the office yet !!! :-)
Thanks for the suggestion for somewhere to hide that printer, I’m going to figure something out for that!
