Comments (20)Urinary Tract Infections: UTIs occur much more frequently in girls, particularly those around the age of toilet teaching, because a girl's urethra is shorter and closer to the anus. Uncircumcised boys younger than 1 year also have a slightly higher risk of developing a UTI. Other risk factors for developing a UTI include: * an abnormality in the structure or function of the urinary tract (for example, a malformed kidney or a blockage somewhere along the tract of normal urine flow) * an abnormal backward flow (reflux) of urine from the bladder up the ureters and toward the kidneys. This condition, known as vesicoureteral reflux (VUR), is present at birth, and about 30% to 50% of children with a UTI are found to have it. * poor toilet and hygiene habits * the use of bubble baths or soaps that irritate the urethra * family history of UTIs Yeast Infections: In most cases, yeast infections can be prevented by keeping the vaginal area clean and dry. Jock Itch: jock itch can usually be treated with over-the-counter antifungal creams and sprays. When using one of these, kids should: * Wash and then dry the area using a clean towel. * Apply the antifungal cream, powder, or spray as directed on the label. * Change clothing, especially the underwear, every day. * Continue this treatment for 2 weeks, even if symptoms disappear, to prevent the infection from recurring. There are lots of adverse effects of poor hygiene, besides dying. Even though many of these are not 'caused' by not bathing, it can worsen a problem that is already there if you don't properly clean. (besides having a stinky kid) There are many other conditions that can be prevented (or part of treatment is )by keeping clean. If parents of a newborn or infant didn't bathe their child, they would be neglectful parents. As kids get older, they get dirtier and teaching them good hygiene is the parent's responsibility. Skipping a day is probably not a big deal, but several days can be. Especially school aged kids that are in contact with other kids that pass along more germs. Who would let their kid go days without brushing teeth? or washing hands after using the toilet?...See MoreThoughts on Corian for shower threshold, top of bench, etc?
Comments (11)One huge concern over the installation of these materials is the process the installer takes. So many these days (most I would say or at least 80%) of installers instal these products with nothing more than construction adhesive. I would insist that a premium thin-set be used for this process and not construction adhesive. I would go as far as making sure the company supplying and installing it rights it on the sales order. I was horrified when on my last job - after specifiying it the stone guys installed my slab for my client with construction adhesive. If you plan to heat under the slab bench the heat transfer will be better with thin-set as well....See MoreI despise squeeging...thoughts on a doorless shower for this bathroom?
Comments (30)Just an aside. We had spotting/rime/etc. problems in our bath/shower/dishwasher/sinks for years due to the local hard water. My wife used to change the shower curtain liners about once a year due to the buildups and slimy feel. We moved into our current house, which had a water softener installed, but that was inoperable. I replaced it and most of those water problems went away. In fact, the build up of deposits on the inside of the stainless steel dish washer have disappeared. I understand the draw of a doorless shower, but for those who do not have the room, the softener can substantially reduce deposits, reduce the amount of detergents needed, make you feel cleaner, and help your water heater last longer. Disclaimer---I do not now and have never sold water softeners. And have no stock in a company that does. :-)...See MoreI'd love people's thoughts on shower benches.
Comments (36)If I just needed a foothold for shaving, I would put a 4" ledge in one end.. Toiletries can sit on it, as well. I have used a fold-down shower bench at a hotel handicapped shower and it held my 310 lbs fine. I was impressed with it and even measured it to be sure that if I ordered one for home, I would get one at least that size. I believe it was only 14" deep and 21" long. My shower (which is going to be installed in the next few weeks after 4 years of planning!) is 37" deep and 62" long. I decided not to get a built-in bench because I cannot predict what I may need. I may need the space for a wheelchair. I do have a large plastic seat and I can get the back for it. Hubs takes it out of the shower when he showers, so it does not get wet every time someone showers. I have it set so that it is easier for me to rise, so it is hard to use it to shave. I did get a corner grab-bar/shelf that I plan to set at a low height to use for resting my foot on to wash.It is there in the corner. I figure that since my shower shelves are quite high, I needed it to have for when I need to sit to shower, anyhow. Another consideration for me is that I have a rainhead going into the center of the shower for use by me. Hubby does not like getting his face wet. I will enjoy getting wet all over, not just half of me at a time, which is the experience in a normal shower. I freeze for a while in the cold weather, under the regular shower head, until I can rotate enough to get warm all over! So by having a portable stool, I can position it under the rainhead....See MoreTrish Walter
