Comments (5)Compare construction details. Are the corner braces plastic or wood, or are there twin I-beams? I would want Blumotion full extension soft-close drawer glides. Is the back panel 1/2” thick or cheaper thin back with a 1/2” hanging rail? Are the drawer boxes Birch or Maple (Maple looks better but costs much more)? Are shelves 3/4” solid wood, edge-banded plywood or particleboard/MDF? Are you getting furniture ends (false doors) for Exposed cabinet sides or simply flush finished sides? Personally prefer plywood and 3/4” thick sides for greater strength (perhaps overkill) but I would get two quotes per brand — one with plywood and one with particleboard — so you are getting apples to apples comparison and you can decide if upgrading to plywood is worth the cost. Plywood, with layers at angles, has structure; particleboard doesn’t. A lot is just personal preference and priorities. For a large (30” wide or greater) pantry, I definitely prefer 3/4” plywood sides; I would see if it is possible or feasible to get a few specific cabinets plywood and the rest particleboard. Some companies manufacture tall cabinets (pantries, refrigerator surrounds, oven cabinets, etc.) only with plywood. Main thing is using same exact specifications for valid comparison....See MoreKraftmaid vs Diamond vs Barker vs
Comments (9)KM has several lines. I'd bet that that is the lower specified line with an Evercore door. That's the only way to get it that much cheaper than Diamond. What is the box construction and corner braces? It can still create a beautiful kitchen in the hands of a skilled designer. The big risk is that box stores rarely have skilled designers. You may want to hire a KD separately to do the design, and just give that to the store designer. There are a lot of ways to get it wrong. Every time I think I've seen it all, someone creates a better mess up! Here's a kitchen that I did in the lower spec'd line....See MoreReally need help with the issues I have with Home Depot
Comments (25)I feel for you that you didn’t get what you wanted. But there is no way that that was not obvious on the documentation. The good news is that Evercore is a better choice for long term durability and surviving wear and tear than a standard painted wood would be. Even had you chosen a painted wood, the center panel would be MDF. And the drawer fronts. The only change to the product between painted maple and Evercore is the actual door stiles and rails. HD order agreements are very very thorough. They have multi million dollar lawyers creating them, and all of that fine print. Home Depot project documentation folders have multiple forms with multiple places to indicate door style, color, material, and options selected. The print out of the order itself indicates these options on each and every line for each and every cabinet in the order. That is the descriptive order agreement itself that gets scanned to be paid for, and which has multiple places that require signatures. If the cabinet seller was new and failed to fill out the folder cover, or any of the required selection forms documentaion, the order print out would still have the product description on each cabinet line. Some orders go up to 40 pages of these descriptions, and have places to sign for the right of recision, the non refundable special order section, and the labor agreement. Then there’s the credit slip signing which uses verbiage that aligns with the sales agreement that all special order items are non refundable and signing indicates correctness of the order and the acceptance of those terms, plus the payment portion agreement. Evercore is a great option! Claim the serendipity of the moment and go ahead and install your kitchen and enjoy it!...See MoreKraftmaid- what's the scoop?
Comments (22)@Amri If you're on a budget, it may actually be worth the risk for you to go with either KraftMaid or Schuler from Lowe's during one of their deep discount sales. If you'll see the photos from @kirbybunny7 above, that's a recent installation of KraftMaid. There's more color variation and grain divergence by far in @kirbybunny7's kitchen than you'd get from a premium brand like Jay Rambo that specifically color and grain matches all of its cabinetry fronts, however, you're paying half the price or even less via KraftMaid. For $17,000 USD, all those KraftMaid cabinets was actually a very good price when compared to higher level brands, and if you're willing to accept this level of quality, then you could end up being happy. Another thing you'll run into with KraftMaid is that sometimes the measurement tolerances are a little off. If you're not a perfectionist about everything lining up to 1/16" or 1/32" like you'd see in premium cabinetry, then again you could be satisfied with this brand even if there are up to 1/8" or so variations in the tolerances. If you order from Lowe's and there are finish defects upon arrival, push to get the replacements immediately. Don't wait to file warranty claims. If you're planning on painted cabinetry, then the color and grain variations in natural wood with just a clear top coat will not be as much of a problem going with a less expensive brand, however, the durability of the finish could come back to bite you since chipping is more evident in painted cabinetry than in clear coated cabinetry. Review the latest input from as many places around the web as you can on any brand, and be fully informed before you jump in. Schuler/Medallion may not be a bad investment for you either. There have been recent complaints about Schuler/Medallion's finish quality and warranty fulfillment, but overall the brand is known for decent products in most instances. By way of a personal note in closing, I took a non-direct route to getting custom cabinetry by working with a local builder, and it's been what I would call a nightmare. The delays have been unbelievable, and these aren't pandemic delays, just communication breakdowns with the people who should have been responsible to fulfill our order much sooner and more efficiently than they have. We are also now stuck with having to finish the cabinetry ourselves because the builder's finish guy turned out to not be doing a durable coating and absolutely refused to discuss with us a more advanced coating for the cabinetry, and this was after we had already placed a deposit with the builder who wouldn't allow us to back out. We took too many people's word for it regarding the details of how our order would be processed, and hopefully everything will turn out well in the end, but long story short I am looking back now and wishing maybe I had given KraftMaid or Schuler a chance. It's possible I could have ended up with cabinetry that would have been more than satisfactory with the coating included for about the same price or even less that I'll be paying with our local builder. If you're on a budget, then you have to cut costs somewhere, and going with an entry to mid-level brand that doesn't get sterling reviews all the time might be one way to do that....See MoreRelated Professionals
