Medallion Silverline Painted (MDF) Cabinets - need advice
Comments (8)I am a K&B Designer, and I also carry and sell Medallion Cabinetry. It is a great line that has tons of finish options and customization. Their customer service is phenomenal. Here is the clip out of the Silverline Spec book explaining MDF. MDF is becoming more widely accepted, especially in states with all 4 seasons (or high temps vs low temps and changing humidity). MDF does not expand and contract like solid wood does, so it accepts a painted finish very cleanly. Sometimes you end up seeing some small lines and splits in your painted finish when using solid wood, but with MDF there is a much better chance that it won't happen. Not that I condone lying... but... if your K&B Designer didn't tell you it was going to be MDF and you got them installed, I can guarantee you wouldn't be able to tell the difference and you would be just as happy with them. Don't let the idea of not having solid wood scare you! MDF is engineered for this purpose....See MoreKraftmaid vs Diamond vs Barker vs
Comments (9)KM has several lines. I'd bet that that is the lower specified line with an Evercore door. That's the only way to get it that much cheaper than Diamond. What is the box construction and corner braces? It can still create a beautiful kitchen in the hands of a skilled designer. The big risk is that box stores rarely have skilled designers. You may want to hire a KD separately to do the design, and just give that to the store designer. There are a lot of ways to get it wrong. Every time I think I've seen it all, someone creates a better mess up! Here's a kitchen that I did in the lower spec'd line....See MoreWhite cabinets- maple vs Thermafoil
Comments (8)I personally don't have either in my home but I work for a cabinet/ interior finishing company and have experience in this area. Because we are a small rural company with a reputation build primarily on word of mouth we refuse to do certain things in our shop that we know won't hold up. The last thing we want is to run into a client in 3 years at the grocery store and have them be upset that their cabinetry or counters don't hold up, even if we warned them of the problems with the product. One of these things that we refuse to do is install thermafoil doors. When the painted finish started becoming popular we were only using solid wood doors. Most durable, best quality and ultimately thats what we want to give our clients. However as we have begun to do more and more of them we decided to switch to MDF one piece doors for a painted finish. The MDF doors do not have the cracking problem with the painted finish and will stay looking "perfect" a bit longer than your wood doors. Yes they are not as resistant to water damage but the only other option is inevitable cracking at the joints. Something also to be aware of is that your painted finish will chip over time, some areas more quickly than others. You will see many posts on here of people asking what should be done about the chips in their painted cabinetry. Unfortunately because the paint does not penetrate the surface of the wood like a stain, dings and scratches show up much more quickly. I understand loving a painted finish, I do to, if you decide to go with it I suggest using a MDF one piece door. Make sure it is a one piece door, as a 5 piece MDF door will still expand and contract like a 5 piece maple door....See MoreReally need help with the issues I have with Home Depot
Comments (25)I feel for you that you didn’t get what you wanted. But there is no way that that was not obvious on the documentation. The good news is that Evercore is a better choice for long term durability and surviving wear and tear than a standard painted wood would be. Even had you chosen a painted wood, the center panel would be MDF. And the drawer fronts. The only change to the product between painted maple and Evercore is the actual door stiles and rails. HD order agreements are very very thorough. They have multi million dollar lawyers creating them, and all of that fine print. Home Depot project documentation folders have multiple forms with multiple places to indicate door style, color, material, and options selected. The print out of the order itself indicates these options on each and every line for each and every cabinet in the order. That is the descriptive order agreement itself that gets scanned to be paid for, and which has multiple places that require signatures. If the cabinet seller was new and failed to fill out the folder cover, or any of the required selection forms documentaion, the order print out would still have the product description on each cabinet line. Some orders go up to 40 pages of these descriptions, and have places to sign for the right of recision, the non refundable special order section, and the labor agreement. Then there’s the credit slip signing which uses verbiage that aligns with the sales agreement that all special order items are non refundable and signing indicates correctness of the order and the acceptance of those terms, plus the payment portion agreement. Evercore is a great option! Claim the serendipity of the moment and go ahead and install your kitchen and enjoy it!...See Moresunni12
