Need expert advice - subtly white washed floors
Comments (14)I'm going to point out the Elephant in the room - the Red Oak. The inspiration photos you are showing are European Oak. So why not go with European Oak? I've lived in Germany where European Oak is THE oak product used for floors and it NATURALLY turns these pale colours - nothing else needs to be done. So why not START with the RIGHT wood? I've seen dozens of European Oak floors with a water based poly that have turned silver in SUNLIGHT. Yep. After 10 years...they did it themselves. So that being said....I would look to European Oak (start with the right material...you won't have to fight so much) and look at water based polyurethane. Done and Done. Now, to be clear, water based polyurethanes (especially the big boys) are VERY VERY VERY different from oil based. Here's an example: Oil based has a "working time" of 45 minutes. That means you can piddle around and muck about and push it around for 3/4 of an hour before you have to move on to another spot. Compare that to water based: Bona Traffic has a 2 MINUTE working wet edge!!!!! TWO MINUTES!!!! Now imagine the PROBLEMS Chuck in a Truck will have with something that is 10-20 times faster. In a HEART BEAT they will have mucked up your floor....and that's just the first 100sf feet. Imagine the other 4000+ sf. Yuck...sigh...heart break in a can. Go ahead and hunt down someone who is NWFA Certified Installer/Sand & Refinisher: www.nwfa.org (click on 'Certified Professionals' and go from there). But start with the right material = European Oak. It gets MUCH EASIER from there....See MoreNew 8" white oak- Bona Traffic advice
Comments (16)These floors look great and I love the herringbone. Well my floors were coming out looking so good and my contractor’s flooring guy used SEMI GLOSS for the finish even though we all told him not to and to use Satin. Everyone I talked to suggested satin. He said he used semi gloss by accident. So far he only did one coat, can he cover with one coat of Satin and the he’ll be ok? I do not want the shiny floor look. My floors are white oak select so I want the floors to shine through not the gloss....See MoreUnfinished Wide Plank Oak Install in Maryland - Need Expert Advice!
Comments (12)Thanks for the responses. The wood came from a mill in TN. I called and talked to the the company I ordered through and they sent me the NWFA installation guidelines, but didn't have any specific beyond that. The NWFA installation guidelines don't seem to get too specific on wide plank installs though. So it looks like I don't really have any mfg guidelines to be following here. G&S, you said use a roll on vapor retarder and then apply beads of glue directly onto the subfloor? How does that work? Are you putting the vapor retarder and then applying beads of glue on top of that, rather than the plywood subfloor? Or did I misread that and you meant skip the vapor retarder and apply beads directly to plywood subfloor and then nail? What vapor retarder do you use, and what glue for your beads? Thanks again for the thoughts. Jason...See More5” white oak install parallel to floor joists?
Comments (22)"Not a recommended procedure." By whom? The floor has bracing, the purpose of the blocking is not roll-over protection or hurricane protection or even seismic protection... it is to limit subfloor sagging between joists... PERIOD! "Weakened planks and second-floor bounces are best fixed with a new layer of plywood" Either the problem is solved or it isn't, either the solution is cost effective or it isn't. The best solution in one situation may not be the best solution in another. When the typical solutions don't work, you look for other ways to accomplish the same thing. The solution to add plywood is the best solution in most situations, but is suboptimal when the problem exists in only a small area. Suppose the living room is 300 square feet of a 3,000 square foot home. The best solution in that case may not be add 3,000 square feet of plywood nor would it be transition down... The best solution would be find a way to achieve the same results without adding height to part or all of the floor, e.g. from below. At times, that is not possible, but sometimes it is. This is something that my floor guy has done several times. It does work just fine....See MoreJohnson Flooring Co Inc
