How to organize a weird closet
Comments (14)@Karin L: The closet is near/on the side that my bedroom door opens, so if the wall was to be torn down, a sliding or accordion door would be much better than the standard door. Even though with the space constraints, I would just pick a sliding door since it'll be easier. I'm able to get 16inch hangers in but at an angle so everything is not flat against each other (if that makes sense). What I did try the first time I organized was to put winter coats on the left side (side with the door) and store summer stuff on the right side, then switch it up to the opposite way during the summer. This has worked but I'm the type of person who likes to see what I have, not have stuff hidden. But, I understand that we can't always get what we want -_- I do like the idea of the mobile hanging/shelf units, but I rather make it myself then looking forever for something that is 15 inches wide. Thanks for the idea! :D @LuAnn: I grew up sharing a room with an older sister and even though our closet was tall and deep, she took up everything with crap. Our floor to the closet was filled with a pile/mountain of just her shoes. So when I got my own room and closet I was just happy to get something that I could claim as my own. I did notice that the closet would be a problem but I figured I would just make it work. Also, the walls and bare wood floor (the owners never took care of the nice wood floor so it was like it just got cut from a tree and placed on the floor...splinter city) needed more of my attention, so I focused on those more. @Graywings: You do have a point and I have considered that, which is another reason why I'm hesitant to go through tearing down a wall. But, it really would have made sense to have the door in the middle or a more open space when the space is only 15 inches width....See MoreNeed Help Maximizing New Coat Closet Space
Comments (3)I have a tall closet, w/ a tall door even, and I find that storing stuff on the topmost shelf is hard because I have to maneuver stuff down in front of everything to get it into the doorway. So I used short "under-bed" boxes up there. The standard "stash a lot of stuff" bins are too big to make the turns. (and that's w/ a closet door that's as tall as a regular door plus a transom) These are 9.5-ft ceilings, so note that there's only about 14" of space above the door opening (see the corner w/ the ceiling in it, on the far right?)--and it's still a tight turn. So, don't let the topmost shelves stick too far out into the space, or you won't be able to get anything in or out. And of course, pockets on the back of the door would be nice for mittens, gloves, dog leashes. And as he's framing, remember that having space "around the corner" from the door frame (when the door is 24" wide, but the closet is 36") is really annoying and hard to get to. So try to have your doorway go the full width of the closet....See MoreWeird backyard nook, need ideas
Comments (11)"We are in the process of having a privacy fence put in along the back and sides..." That IS a plan. But it's only verbal with no details, so we can't understand its extent, style or details. A major detail is that the other fences are going to be removed and we didn't know that until now. That's a good thing and will make fixing the grade a lot easier. Hopefully, if fixing grade affects any neighboring property, the neighbors will be cooperative....See MoreHelp with weird pegboard closet
Comments (7)They look like ceiling acoustic tiles that someone has stuck to the wall. Pry them off, repair, replace drywall, or re-plaster the wall underneath, then prime and wallpaper as you like if they bother you enough to do that much work. They were probably put up to hide underlying damage to the walls. I'm sure the asbestos police will be here to warn you of the potential dangers of such tiles, so I won't....See MoreKirsten E.
