What is your favorite Rock Garden Plant?
Comments (4)Do you know the Botanical name for it? I think I have some smaller varieties of heathers in my rock garden. 8" to 12" a Calluna Vulgaris and Erica darleyensis, but I didn't get any heaths. What's the difference between a heather and a heath? After checking into it a little, it seems like my Erica darleyensis is a heath and the Calluna Vulgaris is a heather....See MoreWhat is your Favorite Old-Fashioned Plant ?
Comments (32)I love this thread! My favorite is daffodils! When I was a little girl there was an abandoned old home site next door to the church down the street from our house. Huge rows of daffodils lined the property and each spring I would go every day the daffs were blooming and pick bouquets. I would pass them out to all our neighbors between the churchyard and our house. It became a ritual I would do every spring. When my daughter was very small I started taking her down to see the daffodils. Of course I love lilacs too-they also remind me of growing up - we had a beautiful lilac in our yard. I would always take a bouquet to school to my teacher when it was blooming. What memories! Marianne...See MoreWhat are your favorite Ipad apps?
Comments (16)You're welcome tina :) I really didn't load up my iPad either, I have much more on my iPhone, not for any particular reason I can think of though. A couple more iPad apps I like: GoSkyWatch It's a planetarium app for anyone who likes astronomy. Point it to the night sky and the app will identify what's up there :) There is a free and paid version. If you buy, it's still much less $ than other astronomy apps. And Civil War Today (a History Channel app). Pricey as apps go but back when I purchased it was half off (and is 50% off right now, too) Packed with interesting information for any CW buffs. It follows the war in daily format from its early rumblings, unfolding it to the app user much like someone who lived during that period would be exposed to developments. In addition to headlines are photo of the day, number of casualties to date for each side, a day in the life (both men & women, letters written), what the world was like at the time and battle maps....See MoreApps for Identifying Roses
Comments (7)The best way I know how to find an identity of ANY rose, old or modern, is the following: 1) Take LOTS of pictures of one rose - of the buds, open blooms, leaves (lay out on a piece of white paper and take pic of them, then turn it over and take a pic of the back), prickles (thorns), hips, if any, and most importantly, the entire bush. 2) Write a post for the ANTIQUE ROSE FORUM on here (many folks who hang out there are true rose experts, and love to try and identify them, whether they are antique or not). Explain where you are geographically (VERY important), and when you think the roses may have been planted (how old is the house?). Follow the post with the pictures of say, 2-4 of your roses, grouped of course one rose at a time. WAIT - it may take a few days for folks to see your post. 3) Another thing you can do is find a rose society near you, and take a vase with cut roses in it to a meeting, and ask the people there to see if they know who your roses are. It takes a little time, but it is fun, and makes a fun game for those who want to help you. Jackie...See Moregardengal48 (PNW Z8/9)
