I was in so much shock that I never asked “how” this surgery would be done until I talked to a niece today. The surgeon will need to remove the baby from the mother via C Section, do repairs to its spine, and put back into mother for hopefully another 2-3 months, and at the appropriate time, they will do another C Section for delivery. Children’s Mercy seems to have the only surgeon in the nation who does this surgery, so we are fortunate to have him this close. It is up to God’s will what will happen but praying for strength for the parents to accept whatever is meant to be.

What an astounding medical procedure you've described. I can't imagine the stress...or the costs involved.

The first time I heard of spinal bifida was when a couple living in my mother's condo building had a baby born with the condition. The father, Doug Buffone (sp?) played for the Chicago Bears.

phoggie, your description of that amazing surgery gave me goosebumps down my arms! It's worth doing to give the babe a better life. How scary, though. Keep us informed. We all care.

Thank you for prayers and concerns. They were to do surgery Thursday but decided that another test needed to be make and results won’t be back for 5-10 days. I feel so sorry for the parents....they were emotionally prepared to have it done....so waiting is hard on them.

i did see the feature on Today but that little one’s SB was in the lower part of his spine, which is a much better place (if there can be)...our baby is at the top and that is the worst place it can be.

I have no idea about the cost but it sounded from the clip that it is terribly expensive and insurance doesn’t cover much. We all are putting it in God’s hands...He won’t give them more than they can handle...,but we can never have too many prayers 🙏

OH Phoggie, I feel so sad for those parents, and your whole family. I believe as you do that it is in God's hands, but you all are on my prayer list for strength and comfort.
