Ikea Sektion Cabinets - custom drawer heights

Hi everyone,

I’m a long time follower of this forum and I want to thank everyone for their advice and shared knowledge. It’s been so helpful to search old posts and find information that I needed.

I’m renovating my kitchen with Ikea cabinets boxes and custom door fronts from a local manufacture. Most of my base cabinets will be drawers and I’m wondering if I can change the heights of the drawers in increments of 32mm. I like the look of drawers drawers aligning horizontally and when the bottom drawers are same height. But custom cabinets are out of our budget.

The Sektion 3 drawer size combinations are 4 7/8’, 9 7/8” and 14 7/8” high. I would like to change it to: 7 3/8” (+64mm), 11 1/8” (+32mm) and 11 1/8” (-96mm). Does anyone know if this would work?

If you're having a custom shop do the fronts, that would be a question to pose to them. They may want to see the drawer boxes on site to determine the potential.

You can definitely change the drawer front sizes to anything you want. If you keep the drilling lay out (Which you would for the bottom drawer anyway) you can adjust the upper drawer drilling if need be. If you stick to 32mm increments you probably won't have to. We make custom fronts for Ikea and change the size to fit the look we are going for. Here's a example on one kitchen.

Steph, I looooove the pull out trash! We went with the two trash can ikea sells with lids and I wasn't sure how I would love the lid, but I do! It keeps the smell away and looks more "clean" when it's opened. We had the pullout for the trash made to look like three drawers too so it would blend in more and we couldn't be more happy with that choice. We fell in love with the stone too! I agree with the touches, when we told my parents it was Ikea (and my dad is super "wood is supreme" kind of guy) they couldn't believe it! Lanne, Thanks! We bought them off of ebay! I am a deal finder and found ones i loved from Houzz and googled for them to get a deal. They are "Fulcrum" in champagne bronze by Atlas Hardware. We found so many deals by finding things we loved and then going on ebay or waiting for an Overstock.com 12% coupon to buy. Overstock doesn't charge for shipping or tax, SUCH a save when you're buying expensive items!

I'm guessing it has to do with the drawer front. There are two parts to the directions, one for if it is for an interior (hidden) drawer, vs a typical drawer. Where you screw those bell shaped metal pieces into the drawer front (done before you snap the front into the drawer) is what is different depending on the type of drawer you're doing. I'm pretty sure yours is screwed in as if it is for a hidden drawer as that kind does sit a bit lower that the regular drawer. The portion you made the mistake on should be back really close to the beginning of the drawer instructons and will require you to remove the drawer front. Hi, I'm about to replace a 20 year old Ikea Akurum kitchen with a new Ikea Sektion one. We're planning to get everything new and not reuse anything from the old kitchen. Most cabinets are similar or better, but we have two corner cabinets with lazy susan and Akrum used to have a drawer and door on those cabinets, and Sektion only has a larger door. These drawers are essential in our kitchen, they are the most used drawers in the entire house. Has anyone installed a drawer in those Sektion corner cabinets? I could get smaller doors and drawers that fit, the only thing missing is the vertical board on one side of the drawer to mount it on. I could even keep the old Akurum lazy susans that have one level instead of 2. Any tips and feedback appreciated. Cheers, Alex

It's always done this way in a custom application but check your measurements because you will need closer to 24-7/8" . Doors are not 1/2", rails on the walls and a gap between door and cabinet for hinge and of course if you scribe to an uneven wall you need to consider that also. Ikea boxes are actually 1/16" wider than they say so the gap between face and panel will be fine.

Thanks for confiming Jdesign. I'll adjust the drill holes on the drawer fronts.

Not sure you have to adjust the holes. Just said you have that option if needed. You have to lay it out and test. I would get a few of the really inexpensive Haggeby fronts taller than you need and cut them to the size you want for a test mock up before I did anything. The bottom drawer will not change but you screw the front connector in different hole locations on any Ikea drawer.
