Wrap backsplash to sides or not?
Comments (13)I know your dilemma! Have sort of temporarily given up on the BS search (have a whole house/yard to reno- so there's enough on my mind), but I have a similar corner where my stove is. Though in my case, the other side of the stove the counter is an L so the BS will continue on there. I also have 36" from edge of cooktop to wall, so there is not the same issue of splashing/grease concerns. However, looking at your pics, and seeing your choice of a 'brick' style, I would just cover the back walls in both cases, and not bring the BS around at all. Then you visually have the look of a 'brick wall' which if it really was a brick wall would not end arbitrarily either at the height or end of a cabinet! If you use a good quality scrubbable paint like BM, you can wash any spills off the side walls, and then you can potentially use the wall to hang utensils/pictures etc....See MoreTyvek "DrainWrap vs. Tyvek "HomeWrap" with James Hardie Lap Siding
Comments (7)Ditto Worthy and JDS, Best would be 3/8-3/4" strapping with coravent or crafted insect screen at top and bottom. Any flat non-woven housewrap like 15# felt, standard tyvek or typar would be fine in that application if not using a WRB integrated structural sheathing like Huber Zip. If installers aren't comfortable with a true rainscreen strapping, then homeslicker would be next best followed by drainable housewraps. We've used 3d mesh like homeslicker behind shingles but not lap siding as I've read it can become wavy. Good job researching best siding practices. I don't think any siding should be installed flat against structural sheathing with standard housewraps in any climates except very dry. Non-insulated vinyl being an exception as it creates it's own rainscreen. Check out Matt Risinger's video to see a performance experiment between regular tyvek and stuccowrap. Speaking of which, I hope you are including exterior foam or similar performing wall details....See MoreP F Chang's Lettuce Wraps

Comments (36)Its interesting that the OP would think half-story-height masonry on only the front of a house would look like a tract house. To me, half-story-height masonry on any side of a house would look like a tract house and full-story-height masonry on only the front is not uncommon on historic colonial era houses where its obvious the masonry is actually supporting the floors of the house. These days, with the growing supremacy of imitation, when little is what it apears to be, it is often impossible to identify a material until you get close enough to see an embossed texture and/or the awkward transitions between dissimilar simulated materials. Perhaps its not obvious to some that a real masonry wall below window sills would not be stable. The most basic fact about a house structure is that exterior walls span vertically from floor to floor and transfer wind & earthquake loads to the horizontal floor plates where they are distributed to the side walls and then to the foundation. Ignoring this most basic building principle tends to rob a house of its integrity, if only at a subconscious level, and creates a vague sense of disrespect for the past and reality in general....See Morebeesneeds
