Need ideas how mix and match different edging stones
Comments (10)My reluctance is not because they perform poorly, actually quite opposite. Ajuga is very invasive, but it is a beautiful and hardy plant, so I tolerate it along the north side of the house which it shares with vinca minor. I have couple groundcover plants that will be suitable on south-east (front) side of the house, but they are bright yellow and I would like to stay with pink/purple/blue colors for flowers. Your post inspired me (again :) to give a fresh look at groundcovers. Before this venture with planting hydrangea and widening existing bed I was not even considering them, but now I will have room. I already picked few that are supposed to do well in zone 5, but now I need to do more research and find out how they perform in real life. Nursery descriptions and pictures are so enticing... Comments (10)When I did a hang out room for the kids years ago I did it with the thoughts that all tops needed to be nearly bullet proof, the sofa had to be leather so I could clean it, I would revamp used things so I would not worry about things getting destroyed and the room had to be suitable for adults as well. I do not have a picture of the sofa area on the other side because that area is now an office but the sofa was leather and matched the drapes (and hit dirt). Those bar tables on each back corner were rusty and used so I painted the base stalk to match the used bar stool bases and added glass mosaics to the bottom and painted the tops adding several coats of poly. The picture frame came from a thrift store and I added my own mixed media art on top of an old painting I also painted the other picture. The room would only take a small pool table, I bought it used for $150 and had it re-felted. The coffee table near the sofa came from a garage sale and I added a bullet proof granite top. On top of the coffee table was a very cool antique brass chess set (from a garage sale). I also had two ottomans near the sofa and coffee table in reds, raisin , purple and teal tapestry fabric for extra seating and also because it would not hamper the pool playing in limited space. From that area (sofa) you could view a wall mounted TV for sports. So, even though the room was not large I still had areas, areas for game playing and TV watching, areas for snacks, and the center for pool playing....See Moreneed a simple footing idea for a deck support
Comments (2)Thank you! Actually, the area that I put these two deck blocks on is where my AG pool was installed last August. We moved into the new home in Nov of 2005, and the back lawn area was only slightly leveled by the pool installer with a Bobcat dozer. Crushed stone has been on the ground under the deck area since last Sept. So, what I did was clear away the crushed stone in the couple locations where I wanted to situate the 2 deck blocks. Snipped the aluminum U-shaped track that the pool deck supports stand on, flattened out the sides of the track where I snipped it, placed the deck blocks in the spots and made certain they were level. I think the combination of the soil and crushed stone being in place for 8 months (including the winter and subsequent spring thaw), and the location being covered by the decking above (so not subject to deep snow accumulation and puddling rains) has the ground that the deck blocks sitting on being pretty firm. The gaps around the edges of the deck block base I stuffed more rocks and dirt in there, and then backfilled the deck blocks with more crushed stone to be level with the stone around the rest of the area (4-5" of stone). THe 4x4s are situated in the deck blocks, supporting the aluminum deck above, and the 4x4s are also fastened to the adjacent wood deck joist with 8" lag screws. Will also add a couple pieces of cross bracing between the 4x4s. Feels very sturdy, though. Thanks for the deck block tip!...See MoreFlooring Do They Need to Match through the home
Comments (3)It is preferable to have them all the same, but not mandatory. If you will stay in the home for more than 7 years, you will probably have all the floors removed and replaced before you sell anyways. If you plan to sell in the next 5 years (or less) then it is best to have everything in one material. It is much better for resale. It all depends on how you see the future unfolding and on your current budget. You still need to like your flooring and your bank balance while you live there!...See Moreapple_pie_order
