Woodworking Design Dilemma Kitchens

Crown molding over cabinet molding

I had my cabinets redone recently with 5 1/4 molding on top but there is still a gap to the ceiling of 8-9 inches. My kitchen and living room are an open concept and connect and I'd like to add crown molding to living room which would mean the kitchen as well - Will the stacking of the molding above the cabinets look odd? Do I use the exact same 5 1/4 molding as the cabinet tops as my new crown? My kitchen ceilings are 9 foot and my living room steps down so it's 10 feet. I actually do like the look of this simpler style crown as well but not sure if mixing would work - either overall or where the moldings need to meet above the stove. Would love advice.

Yes, it would look odd to have crown molding over your cabinet, sorry.

I agree. Not much space either way and the cabinets tops are like a molding of their own.

That photo looks great. :O) I'm not sure if I know what you mean, but I just saw a kitchen with cream cabinets glazed with a brown glaze, and the molding at the top of the cabinets (not crown molding in the room, but the actual top molding on the cab's) was a dark brown stained wood. My goodness, it was gorgeous! I know it's the reverse of what you appear to be asking, but I still think the opposite would look great too. I'm having a similar dilemma as you with trim thru the house... can't decide if I want stained doors and trim or painted whitish doors and trim. Well, I know I want wood doors/trim on the main floor, but they are more than 4 times the price as a painted door. And I really would prefer white trim/doors on the 2nd/3rd floors, but the 2nd floor doors are visible from the first floor. Decisions, decisions. Best of luck as you choose. FWIW, I think the white trim sounds great for your home, even with oak cabinetry. :o)

Need advice on caulking crown moldings over colored walls/ceiling

This is how I've done it. Caulked (and like many mentioned) and built it up with a few passes. Taped off the trim but not the very bottom edge of the trim. Painted the caulked wall AND the bottom of the trim. This is the easiest way to do it because even when you look at the most sparkly white trim the bottom always reflects the color of the wall and never looks white anyway so might as well paint it (I have light colored walls everywhere so this has minimal impact on overall look of the moulding). Also taping off the straight edge just above that trim edge is easy and easy to paint everything below and little to no risk of a mess. I'm done, forgot to take pictures.. maybe next time. I think Home Depot, or you may have to look at Building supply rentals. personally I would prob hire someone to do it. crown molding is a little tricky and even more so 22' feet up in the air! and then you'll have to paint it. (unless you hire a house painter. and they may also do crown molding. ) So if you plan on getting the room painted, see if they can also do the crown for you and get a two for one while they're there

When we had our family rooms crown molding put up recently- our crown molding guy took a section of our existing kitchens crown molding with him in order to match. honestly my husband has the better eye when it comes to crown- but in my humble opinion-since your rooms connect- if possible- I’d stick with the same size crown moulding & crown mouldings color to keep the look more consistent & flow nicely.

Can you remove the crown, have a carpenter put trim above the cabinets (matching cabinets color), then add crown? It will look somewhat like a soffit (?) but will get rid of the dust catcher top and put the crown at ceiling level...not a pro just thinking how this might be solvable.

If you add molding to the ceilings, then I would for sure remove the molding from the cabinet tops.

Thanks. The challenge is I want the crown for the living room, so basically trying to determine if cabinet reality is a deal breaker (vs just less than ideal) since I’ve never like how “unfinished” the living room looks. I would not create a soffit.
I’ve found a few pictures of homes with my situation with crown but not many so it is hard to visualize since mine seems thicker. I may be out of luck in living room I guess
