Replanting Grass in Central Texas?
Comments (3)I can tell you the pH of your soil. It is 8.0 just like everyone's between San Antonio and Dallas. You live in the limestone desert. It's several hundred feet down, 200 miles across, and 500 miles long. There is nothing you can do to change the pH for an entire lawn. The solution is to grow grass that is adapted to the situation. St Augustine is THE grass if you have any shade. Let's go back to the trouble you had keeping yours alive. It should not be that hard to keep it looking excellent. How often did you water and for how long? How high do you mow? How often do you fertilize and with what? Also please be more specific about your location. Are you in an Austin suburb or to the west in the trees?...See MoreFires in Central Texas
Comments (37)I was reading about the BIG BURN of 1910 in Idaho where 3 million acres burned in 1 fire. It was the impetuous for the forestry Department to take on the fighting of fires as part of their mission. The riley fire in Northeast Texas has now burned 39000 acres. So many fires in North east Texas. Soxxx, stay safe. They are clustered all around you. How are you doing now?...See MoreAm I doing this right? Planting heirlooms in raised beds Central Texas
Comments (6)I am in a hot humid 8b zone. I don't prune. On occasion when the foliage canopy cannot protect the tomatoes from direct mid day sun in June, the tomatoes get scalded. I sacrifice some growing space to keep full foliage as assurance against scalding. I have 4 plants in a 4 x 4 and I expect I will learn if I have been too optimistic in crowding them. I have a twin sister on Austin. When she relays her gardening experiences, the conditions are more brutal heat wise, always hotter sooner. May be less humid, which may give you some wiggle room to prolong pollination into July. Most of my plants shut down in July. They idle or die. Some survive until the heat subsides. In reading this forum, I learned some in my zone plant out again in July. The July and august...See MoreIs it the Texas heat making this poor baby climber so sad?
Comments (9)Just to touch on a couple of things. You are not a sucker the right roses can be literally plant, feed, mulch and water if needed. After a year or two many are less trouble than perennials. At least it is from Heirloom and has a warranty because in my opinion you probably shall be using it. Personally I don't understand Heirlooms shipping in this heat. Most every mail-order rose nursery has suspended shipping in this high heat. It is just to hard on plants. The yellowed cane in the first photo has died. The next stage is it will turn brown. That one you can cut out. Keep your photos in case Heirloom wants a photo. As others mentioned get shade over what is left of the plant. I would keep it shaded until it starts to regrow or dies. Then slowly reintroduce it to direct sun light starting with morning sun. Please don't be discouraged once you get that first rose to grow there is nothing much better. I'm not sure what your best planting time is mine is early spring. That would give your new rose the best chance to put down roots and grow. You sound as if you grow other plants. Treat your rose as you would a perennial. Yes, I agree watering once a day is too much water. There really is no substitute for checking the soil with your hands or a moisture meter. The top soil does not need to be kept damp. Give a good long drink that gets deep down then let it dry some before watering again. Anyway most of this advice can be found on a good rose site. You can also use the search feature on here to look things up. Pay the most attention to those from your southern area. I've killed more than a couple of plants and roses in my time. One last thing to consider is starting with one of the highly disease resistant roses. Chamblees is in Texas and has some super varieties. Best of luck to you. Never give up you can do it....See MoreK S 7b Little Rock (formerly of Seattle)
