Contractor used drywall compound over latex paint?

Is this okay to do? It doesn't seem like it would adhere well. If it's covered in a primer and more paint will it be okay or is it all going to come off? He doesn't seem to know what he's doing... we are having cabinets and countertops installed in front of it on Tuesday, so I need to know asap if this will be a disaster! thanks!

Are you talking about joint compound on the wall? Yes, that’s where it’s usually used, but why did he need to put it over latex paint if there was no issue? If there was an issue, like exposed drywall or plaster, it needs to be primed with adhering primer like BIN.

Doesn't sound like drywall compound to me. Shouldn't have stained. Try some polish to remove it. If it is truly stained you may need to go over the area with something a little stronger and re-oil. Don't want to suggest something as may damage the wood. Hope someone else can add.

It's not uncommon to find bathroom walls build mostly of wire and plaster in turn of the century multi-unit housing. Evidently itwas an approved practice back then because the resulting wall was essentially fireproof. And, having had to tear a few of them out, I can attest that the resulting wall is pretty darn strong. So, there is nothing wrong with just rebuilding the wall using the same wire and plaster method. But, have a chat with your building inspector first to make sure the rebuild would be approved. If I recall correctly, the method was to stretch wire mesh tautly from floor to ceiling and side to side,, attaching it on all four sides. The applying a thick brown coat, then the scratch coat over that. Since the tile was mud set, a final smooth top coat was not necessary. However, since your tile would be thin set, a smooth and level top coat would be required. There is a special reinforced structural plaster used as the brown and scratch coats, and I don't recall at the moment what it is called, but your local supplier should know. As a shortcut alternative, if you have the room, you could screw and glue 1/2" exterior ply to whatever is left of the old wall for structural support and tile over that. My preference, however, would be to rebuild the original wall. For waterproofing, apply Schlüter Kerdi cloth to the fully cured plaster, (or plywood) then tile over the Kerdi cloth according to Schlüter's instructions.

Greg Beach I had the issue in multiple rooms but only peeled the paint off in the worst room. In the other rooms, we skimmed, applied Gardz, waited 24+ hours, primed and then painted. I don't remember which primer we used - in some rooms it was Sherwin Williams (one of their pro primers because they provided the paint). In other rooms it might have been Ben Moore. We didn't spray the paint. It was always rolled and brushed. The failed paint left a weird residue behind that wouldn't come off no matter what we did. We cleaned the walls, wiped, vaccummed, etc . Only gardz stopped it

He cut a bunch of holes and then reused the same pieces that were already painted and put them back.

He cut a bunch of holes in the wall and put them back, ok, but without support, they’ll just be soft patches that might not last. Joint compound isn’t going to stop it. Why did he cut a bunch of holes in your wall?

He was running wiring behind them. Several decent sized squares. I believe they are attached with screws as well. Smaller ones weren't screwed, he used the California/hot patch method. I just want to know if there will be any peeling issues down the road if it's applied directly to latex semi gloss paint.

It shouldn’t. I use that method all the time, but I don’t just slap latex paint over a patch job. Can you see the outline of the hole where he patched or did he use enough joint compound and sand?

Patching walls is pretty basic and a good skill to have.

Best practice is to knock the sheen off of the areas that you are hoping mud will adhere to. This wouldn't be needed for a flat paint, another option is to prime the area before putting on joint compound (but no one would choose that over 30 seconds with a sanding sponge.)

Having said that, I haven't seen joint compound come off a semi-gloss surface all that easily either. So I would say that I would prefer it sanded but in the interest of picking my battles I wouldn't raise a big stink if it were not sanded, especially over latex paint.

Thanks guys. So far it seems to be okay. it was a pretty messy job, so I spent a long time cleaning it up and feathering out the edges of the ones that will be visible. it's way better, but I do wish he had used another patching method. I was mainly concerned because the back splash is attaching to a large portion of where he did it and I don't want it coming off. Sounds like it should be okay. Thanks for your help.
