Question About Mauves/Lavenders/Purples In Full Sunlight
Comments (12)I think you do need someone in TX to tell you. Fragrant Plum for me in the hot afternoon sun of 100 and higher baked after a day and the blooms crisped and browned all summer. This is my mini, Twilight Skies planted in front of it in July. 2nd day am bloom for FP and the edges are crisped and burned. FP even got the shade before the mini did. In that heat they were the same shade. I think that pics speak nicely. I had to transplant it in Sept to a shady afternoon place. Oct pic of it. Angel Face on the other hand in full all day sun round the clock, color got purer as the heat got higher. No crisping on that rose. A mini flora that does well in the high heat and sun also is Sweet Arlene. Mine ended the year at 3-1/2'tall and it's not done, that was at 7 months old. Beautiful roses for cutting and a strong fragrance. (to take pics of the roses in full sun, I make the shade) Leslie...See MoreSuggestions Needed For Mauves, Lavenders
Comments (14)Alameda, your garden sounds so lovely! And, as someone who used to raise horses, and is also a daylily nut, I particularly admire what you do! I have most of the lavenders you mentioned, and don't know if you are interested in grandifloras, but Melody Parfumee and Fragrant Plum are quite nice and super fragrant. I also rescued Purple Passion from Lowe's the end of last year and it looks OK from what I have seen so far. I have a lavender floribunda that I like a lot, but it should be registered as a miniflora. J&P put it out the year before last, and, now it has disappeared. It is called Lavender Lace. I love the soft lavender color and it blooms with small, well-formed flowers in big sprays. I have lots of apricots, too. One that no one mentioned is Nancy Reagan. That is probably because people think it is a poor grower. I got it from MerryGro on fortuniana last year and am still waiting for it to grow. However, it's blooms are just a beautiful shade of apricot and were big and well-formed this fall. Now I am hoping the bush will grow this year. Another one that I think is a gorgeous apricot-coral color is Spellbound. The flowers have fantastic form. But, like Nancy, the plant needs to grow faster. And, Stan, you have really depressed me! I thought I was getting good at photgraphing roses! Now I see I have a long way to go! Even though I prefer the natural backgrounds, I see the beauty in the black backgrounds, too. So, tell me, how do you do your black backgrounds???...See Morerose color to compliment purple/mauves
Comments (14)Thanks everyone so much! I guess I am FINALLY coming to understand color complements...I have lots of purple runner bean vine, purple butterfly bush, some kind of purple/black caladium and the purple/chartreuse sweet potato vines. Lots of lavender/hot pink cleome, hot pink/chartreuse zinnias and verbena boniarensis.I planted roses for the first time this year and have mostly whites/pinks/reds. I'm in Zone 6 in Nashville with a microclimate closer to 7 probably. I haven't had hardly any disease issues and I haven't sprayed....i guess it's just beginner's luck. I AM feeding and watering them like crazy! I'd love any suggestions for fragrant vigorous free flowering roses good in a vase and any photos or links to photos would be great....See MorePainting my house lavender...but it turned out more mauve.
Comments (18)Thank you everyone for the advice. I went back to Sherwin Williams and played with 1 gallon of paint some more. Made it more blue and more purple...less mauve. Got it home and painted the section between the window where I had my "test" shutter and the front door. Put the shutter back up and realized that I didn't like it. It just looked cold and turned grey, but not a good grey. So, we stuck with the mauvish color. With the 2nd coat is was a little bit more muted. We got the shutters/windowboxes etc. back up and it looks pretty good. I think the mauve is still a bit too pink and the shutters could use to be a bit darker (but hubby said no-way to repainting those this year.) But it looks cottagey and inviting to me and that was my goal. The cream that I had before wasn't bad. I might have kept it if it had not been for the school bus yellow house directly next door. My cream just looked like a washed out version of the yellow. I would have liked to have painted my house a light, warm yellow but that obviously wouldn't have worked with bright yellow next door. I'll be posting some pictures as soon as I can get them off the digi cam. For those of you who wondered my colors are all Sherwin Williams. The shutters are Exclusive Plum and the siding is Intuitive....See Moresultry_jasmine_nights (Florida-9a-ish)
