new at bulbs - paperwhite question
Comments (1)Can only comment on the paperwhites. Paperwhites are forced to bloom at a time that is out of sync for them and usually most people just recommend tossing them out. I've often held daffs and paperwhites for multiple years but be prepared they might not bloom except on alternate years. Eventually they probably will peter out and die off. They need to be fertilized while they have foliage on the plant to store energy for the next cycle. You don't have that opportunity so you might not get blooms this coming year. Paperwhites can't live outside in an area that experiences extended freezing temps - so if you get 32 or below, paperwhites stay in the pot. If you are borderline you can try it. To grow on in pots - they are dormant now so you repot them into new soil, preferably using a bulb fertilizer - I like Bulbtone, or bone meal. You can start watering lightly in the fall. They will throw out foliage and if they had enough energy stored in the bulb they will bloom. If not then they will just use the foliage to store energy again for next year. Its fun to try this, but you will have more guaranteed success by buying new bulbs. The basic rule of thumb is you need to fertilize during the active growth, and then don't water when they are dormant. You can search the net for specific info on your other bulb - sorry I don't know it. Good luck...See Morenew potted dwarf Bonanza peach tree-looks good, need I do more?
Comments (12)I bought 2 bonanza dwarf peach trees back in 2009. They are planted in the ground and have doubled in size since being planted. Currently they are about 4' - 5' tall. They are healthy, bloom like crazy, and every year for the last 3 years they've been covered with "would be peaches" HOWEVER the fruit NEVER develops into an edible peach. The fruit stays green and gets a bit bigger than a peach seed then JUST STOPS. Why? Is this normal? Granted, I probably shouldn't have bought peach trees at Lowes but I'd never seen a small variety and the tag on these said they wouldn't get larger than 6 feet (which was perfect for my yard). Why are they setting fruit but not producing mature fruit? Here's one of the trees (below). The other one is 8 feet to the right (not pictured). Here's how big the "fruit" is (below). It has been this size for a month with no sign of getting any bigger - just like last year, and the year before that (sigh)....See MoreNow I need another New bed!
Comments (3)I finished 'planting'; I sort of cheated because I transferred the hosta to larger pots and put them in the ground - that way they are easier to move around while everything is in its' trial stage. I expanded the existing front bed so it was fairly easy to do. Your garden looks wonderful! I see you have heuchera, too. I planted the Brass Lantern tonight and I absolutely love the way it looks next to the hostas! Paula...See MoreI have a new counch, now I need help with other pieces (pics)...
Comments (30)I mentioned the borders to dh this morning and he likes the idea. Each of the long sides is about 14'. The shot side is about 10'. The other short side is there the 'bridge' is. I'll look at it tonight with dh and see what we can work out. As far as the layout of the living room. As the furniture is now. Looking at the back of the chairs, you are stading by the dining table and behind you, the kitchen. That opening is about 10' wide. Still looking at the back of the chairs, next to the chairs is the couch. And in front of it is the fireplace and the stairs that lead to the upstairs. The couch is about 12 feet long. I would love if it could put the couch where you could see the back, but it is just too big. We did every arrangement we could think of when we first got it so that we wouldn't have to close off the door way (the blank wall that is now behind the couch). Just to give you a little background of the house. When you stand looking at the back of the chairs, you are standing where the carport used to be. We added about 40' to the end of the house about 6 years ago, doing most of the work ourselves. So that is why the layouts ended up a little strange. The now TV area used to be the dining room and kitchen....See Moreamylou321
