New Plants for 2020

The first two orders of plants for 2020 both arrived today - all are new to me:

'Warren's Red' Possumhaw (Ilex decidua) will be a very small start to a replacement of the large 'orient' pear tree destroyed in our June windstorm. Great coneflower (Rudbeckia maxima) is an experiment as a possible alternative in some spots we currently have tall cannas. Texas craiglily (Echeandia texensis) has been on the wish-list since described in Wontonamara's 2018 post.

'Soft Caress' Mahonia (Mahonia eurybracteata) is going to be tried as a replacement for a Kerria japonica 'Picta' that has languished in the unimproved clay beneath dogwood and oaks.

Apologies for the semi-duplicate post. I didn't realize that Houzz apparently has a spam filter that trapped the original post for including a link to an Amazon product page for one of the mentioned plants - that's actually a good thing. I guessed that was my offense and it posted instantly when resubmitted without the link. However, the second thing I didn't realize was that they apparently do have curators (or clever bots) that will release benign content from the spam trap; so, the original did finally show up a couple hours later. I've tagged the original for deletion.... but so far, it persists.

Just another usage detail posters ought to be aware of......

I didn't know about the Amazon link thing. I'll be careful not to use that source as an information link. Good to know.

It's so much fun to try new plants. 'Soft caress' mahonia catches my attention as I've read a lot of good things about it.

So far I don't have anything on a try-this-year list. I'll just wait and see what Rainbow Gardens or Omar comes up with that I can't resist. Not to mention the plant swap!

Well, I did research Chocolate Mimosa just in case I run across one -- on the Lowes sale table of course. In the old days wnen Spike owned GW we'd be sent to Disney Land for mentioning THIS SITE which in this case features the above mentioned chocolate item.

Also looking for my favorite canna, PINK SUNBURST. Can't believe I separated them in late summer and they up and died on me.

I’ve had excellent results with Holland Bulb Farms. They have really good sales, which is nice if you’re on a budget like me. :) I’ve ordered multiple times and everything (except for a few bare root perennials in the end of season clearance grab bag. lol) has been in very nice condition and has performed very well for me. Granted, I actually haven’t used them for sourcing fall bulbs, but lilies, astilbe, dahlias, clematis, and everything else has been so great I wouldn’t hesitate to order tulips and daffs.

I’m loving these pictures! What a lovely idea to go through our gardens alphabetically. And I’m getting so many wonderful ideas from all of you. Arenaria was a new one to me. Now it’s on my wish list for sure! I’m a sucker for tiny white flowers. sandyslopes, that sky blue winky is beautiful! Astilbe, NOID. Always gives me a good show, though. Another NOID. Very tall and grand. This clump was chopped to bits last fall for a trade so it’s not quite up to par in the pic. Aquilega pink Barlow. My first foray into the Barlow style. The flowers nod in the most shy, enchanting way. I also loved the leaves. They are glaucous and very attractive all year, in contrast to the plain green, rather weedy looking foliage of the McKana’s Giant type. Aquilega, random self seeded bicolor. My husband loves these, with their showy spurs. He doesn’t usually take too much notice of plants, so when he mentions one, and looks forward to it every year, I take notice! Lol. Allium karataviense breaking ground. The leaves are prettier than the flowers! Here the alliums are later, in bloom. Not the showiest, but the foliage makes up for it. Allium christophii. Such a showstopper! Those enormous heads covered in stars. My little boys love them.

I got a question for ya, Seed Givers - I got a lot of those tiny ziplocks and my fat, calloused fingers just cannot open them. So I am transferring the seeds into other packaging until I can sow them. Some seeds I will have to give away as those plants won't grow in Florida, and I have a lot that will have to wait until September to sow for winter. So I need to know what will be the best replacement packaging to use to keep my seeds healthy and viable....especially those that will be waiting until fall and Christmas swaps and times to sow. I sometimes have terribly low germination rate and wonder if it's the way the seeds have been stored. What do you guys do?

FYI - If you're interested in this and a "Prime" member, the 2.5 qt size is currently being sold on Amazon at or below the listed big box prices - first time I've encountered Prime "free" shipping for a size larger than a quart in plants I've looked at. What other new plants are being tried this year?
