help from Alameda East Texas on clematis order with roses

Or anyone in Hot Texas... alameda I remember you prefer the large flowered varieties. I saw several I liked in group3. Do these grow in your East Texas climbing roses like those BenT showed in his Dallas garden? I think his were referred to as “thugs”. Do they have long bloom season? Online reading about growing clems in Texas seemed to indicate the large flower variety are problematic. Not worried about wilt rather about strength and duration of flowering. Love those big flowers.!!
Also You might find it beneficial to give Debbie at Silver Star a buzz about her seedlings. I told her u may have an interest and were an informed gardener.

I havent had a problem with my large flowers.........havent grown too many of the other kind because I love the big flowers so much. I need to learn how to post photos from my Iphone; dont know how to hook it up to my computer to post, will have to learn how to do that. I have a photo from last year of 'Monte Casino' on a trellis with Plum Perfect and Pretty Lady Rose roses - just gorgeous!!! I personally dont like the clems vining in the roses, too messy. So I put them on these smaller trellises behind the roses where I can get to them to prune out dead wood but they still can show off their colors with the roses - just personal preference. I also cut them down in spring to the ground [about 6" above] to help build the clem and produce more stems, regardless of what pruning group they are. When they are of sufficient size to suit me, I will start pruning according to their group. I have alot in pots currently - have to get them in the ground hopefully in the next month or so - for no reason other than time has been a problem.

I do get my best flowering in spring, but depending on the variety, will get flowers in summer or fall, but spring is by far the best. I have never worried about which group does best - I just buy what I like. I have what I think [tag lost] Violet Charm growing up against a tree on a trellis that has been there for years - it will grow and flower periodically with little care but fertilizing. Had a Mrs. Chomondeley that was enormous - had some foundation work done, the workers killed it before I had a chance to dig it out, plan to replace it this spring. It was up against the house on the west side, full sun [but good soil and I watered] and it was fabulous. Ernest Markham is another goodie. Again, due to time, the poor thing stayed in the one gallon pot I bought it in for a few years - now planted, it is getting larger yearly.

I have ordered from Debbie and will do so again - when I get my potted ones planted! I would say just go ahead and buy what you like, try them out, Very rarely have I had wilt - but if it happens, just cut them back almost to the ground and they will rebound. Nicole is a good one too, very tough and HF Young is a gorgeous lilac, one of my favorites. They are a beautiful plant; though they look fragile, they arent.

Though I love the large flowered ones......I plan to branch out and try some of the other groups. Hope this helps!

Hello Marquest and all of you other wonderful customers, I'm a little confused about if I should ship your plants because of your frequent traveling schedule. I've sent (yet another) email requesting permission to ship today. Again, my apologies that I've gotten off track with your schedule. Belinda's Dream is a gorgeous rose, huge and filled with petals, and fragrant. I would also suggest a group called tea roses, which are old roses from which the hybrid teas were created. However, they're big and beautiful bushes that like the heat, bloom a lot and are tough. Even if they get some disease (which they don't in my dry heat), they're usually vigorous enough to shrug it off. They come in beautiful soft colors. Unfortunately, most of them are not terribly fragrant, but some like Duchesse de Brabant and Mme. Joseph Schwartz, are. Another group called Noisettes are also wonderful, although they often get larger. Polyanthas are smaller roses that are also quite healthy. The Chinas are also another great group for your climate. The Texas Rose Emporium is a nursery that also sells on-line. I would give them a call. Describe your situation, what you're looking for and your climate. I'm sure they can suggest some lovely roses that will work well for you. The EarthKind roses, as mentioned already, are beautiful and tough roses that were tested in Texas for their disease resistance. The Texas Rose Emporium, Chamblee's and Rogue Valley are all on-line nurseries that will carry them, and also the other roses mentioned. Good luck! Ingrid

Need help combining a climbing rose with clematis

I wonder if one of the old Albas might work better as a climber for this zone. You'd need one of the taller ones, like 'Alba Maxima' or one of similar habit. If you don't have to pull it down and cover it for Winter, you can keep a Type-2 clematis in there. Here, I notice that the clematis get kinda brittle by the end of Autumn, and moving them around will likely end up in snapping them. By Spring, parts that look dead will surprise me and leaf out, and I don't snip off dead tips until I KNOW they're dead -- by snipping off anything above the highest set of leaves that develop. With the Type-3s, you wouldn't have to worry about snapped stems if you're pulling down the rose to cover it for Winter -- you just snip them down low and let them start all over again. Of course, you don't HAVE to do that, if you want it going up a tree or something. But if you do this to a Type-2, you'll lose the early wave of blooms in Spring, which come on growth that went through Winter. I've ordered many plants from Bluestone Perennials and have yet to be disappointed. As long as you understand that they come small, you'll likely feel the same. But they're bursting out of their pots when they arrive, and really take off well for me. I try to take advantage of their frequent sales, including their 50-50 Fridays through Winter. Another source for perennials I've frequented is Joy Creek Nursery. They don't seem to have sales, but their normal prices are pretty good -- higher than Bluestone's sale prices, but lower than their regular prices. So when I'm shopping for perennials, I usually start with Bluestone sales, then go to Joy Creek for anything else I wanted but didn't get. Brushwood Nursery is my go-to for clematis -- and honeysuckle and passion flowers, whenever I get around to getting some. :-) ~Christopher

RVR is one of my favorite nurseries from which I order roses. i visited a few years ago. Janet was most hospitable and let us wander freely to observe the gardens and greenhouses. (Even though it was Monday, their shipping day.) It really is a very small ’mom and pop’ type of business. The packing is extremely protective of the rose bands. I’ve had great success with the bands received. And intend to order more, if I find more room. (Why do I say if…) RVR has so many roses that are no longer available elsewhere. This is where I found the Barden roses I had been looking for: Beautiful Anne and Dakota Redwing, They are doing well.

Yes........Violet Charm is under a big oak - it faces west but is shaded by climbing roses - doesnt get any more sun than that, certainly not full sun for 4-5 hours yet blooms beautifully. Ernest Markham is in back of horse barn - sun until about 2pm. Mrs. Chomondeley is in front of my house - full, all day sun. To me, shady means all day sun, minimum light. If you get 4-5 hours of sunlight, that should be sufficient for any clem. Do you have any clems or are you just starting to buy them? Dont need any more but there are a couple of new ones from Brushwood I have my eye on........

Just starting with clems. sunshine of any type until 2 would be considered full sun to me. Residential yard, 180’ lot, house faces south. Rear yard where I garden. Huge houses left and right one under remodel and growing as I write. Count your blessings for you location. You seem to be trying so many new roses and clems that your experience with them is very very helpful will orderVC today. Thxs!!!
