Buy a house where there was a murder?
Comments (31)N.O. I would think about the murder and gore every day. There's a house near me where there was a murder-suicide many years ago. The house has been totally remodeled so it looks nothing like the original house. I still think of that event every time I drive by. Brrr. Silly as it sounds, I did not even like to think about the previous owners of my house having their bare bottoms in the tub. Yes, I know that is crazy. So glad I finally remodeled and got rid of that tub. Now, if the house were a beauty on a large lot with a private beach and an ocean view for $50K, I might have to reconsider (and replace the bathtubs). I watched The Exorcist by myself. I had to put a knit blanket over my head and watch from between the stitches. Another movie about haunted houses that totally creeps me out is Poltergeist. I'd happily live next to a cemetery, but not on top of the graves....See MoreHas anyone read 'Flip for Decorating?'
Comments (3)hi, i think this decorator has been on today or gma a lot. i have seen her on lots of stuff. she is more into organization and selling pottery barn than decorating, it's a lot of the same stuff you see preached here everyday, about doing things in 3's or any odd numbers, working with height, balance, color, pruning your collections, cleanliness is next to decorativeness, etc. some of her stuff is very basic but really great stuff for those who want to start at the bottom and work up as far as learning proportion, color (she does a lot on using white with all the 8 colors, organizing), teaching you how to decorate bookshelves, collect and edit your collections....See MoreFlip That House seminar- scam?
Comments (20)There are two ways to make (or lose) money in real estate - equity and cashflow. Equity in this market won't just happen on its own in most market, you have to buy VERY low, and probably have to put some elbow grease in. These shows, I watch them and see these tight profit margins that are tight even if everything goes perfectly (making 10% on a %900,000 house in L.A., come on, one false move and you lose 200 grand!) and you haven't even paid the realtor yet! You have to buy at a pretty steep discount, generally 30% or more (which means foreclosures and distressed properties for the most part unless you get lucky), and whatever you estimate as the repair cost, double it. Cash flow from renting the house out is different...but also requires either a BIG down payment or again, a steep discount. Take whatever you can realistically rent that house for, and multiply by 55%. If the principal plus interest of your proposed mortgage payment is over that number, YOU WILL LOSE MONEY....See MoreAnyone watching Beach Flip?
Comments (17)We own a condo by the beach and opted for no vent above the range as we saw some of the other units were doing it. It's perfectly fine and we have had it for 10 years! We have 10 foot ceilings and there is nothing above the range, just like in the pic. You have to consider that these are vacation homes where mostly light cooking is done. Also, you are at the beach, presumably good climate where the windows are open and you enjoy the ocean breeze. All cooking smells are drawn out. Even when we got a cold snap in the winter in Miami and cook with the windows closed, it's still fine. There are no stains on the ceiling whatsoever above the space where you cook, and it's painted with white flat paint. Ventilation is overrated at the beach lol....See Morebpath
