Shower Waterproofing Question
Comments (23)As almost 99.9% always I agree w CTEC. A real tile craftsman. Just look at the mans certification resume and pictorial portfolio. For any homeowner/novices reading along. When you have tile work done, the best and really only way to protect yourself is in the hiring phase, you need a written detailed scope in your contract that references the industry standards to be followed and met. Thus sadly protecting yourself. "All tile and tile related work to be done must meet TCNA, ANSI, UPC, and IRC standards as well as all MFG material instructions to be met and followed...... this simple statement covers everything technically related to the tile install from subfloor/framing, to plumbing and waterproofing connections to tile install standards and forces proper material selections.......yes the price will double and your available pool of skilled workers will dwindle, many hacks will run out your door or just give you the deer in the headlights look and then excuse themselves. Be vigilant.. Other great resources are NTCA, CTI/ CTEF for sourcing certified true tile pros. But its TCNA/ANSI IRC and UPC that relate to tile standards and installation parameters to be met in the USA.. sadly tile installations are not inspected on local levels and there is a serious issue with the tile trades being invaded by handyman/women and novice hacks at 1/4 or 1/2 half price, resulting in mass posting on houzz and the like on the hour. To make it worse we have MFG and box stores selling stuff and telling everyone its easy, DIY. which to me is a serious issue with ethics based on profitability and re-selling. You want the tile professional that sells jobs this way with these standards proudly displayed and adhered to....See MoreWould you recommend a curb-less shower with Schluter-System?
Comments (5)Thanks you. Yes plumber did water tests. Also, I laid the shower wand at the back of the shower and let the water run for 30 minutes. The shower leaked. We removed the shower glass and re-grouted and added silicon caulk to the joints. We resealed the marble. Various and multiple contractors have been unable to find the cause without ripping out the shower. It leaks at the front two corners where the glass meets the marble. After the repairs, we only see water on the right side as you look at the photo. Contractors believe the shower pan is filling up with water some how and overflowing. The leak is actually delayed. You won’t see it for 30 minutes to hours after a shower. So a curb-less shower is not a problem giving it is installed correctly? Same as one with a curb? Yes, finding a qualified installer who will put slab on the wall is like finding a needle in a haystack. The original installer was with an very reputable marble company in Houston, TX. We didn’t go cheap. I’ll check out the links. Thank you....See MoreSchluter Shower Pan
Comments (20)Jeff, The OP was considering profile trim (expansion profile) where tile meets tile in corners instead of caulk/sealant. I agree with you about appearance. Here on Houzz folks are swept up with marketing and limiting their options How often do we see comments state "use a piece of Schluter". Schluter is a company. Not a product. There are so many choices for tile profiles. I'm not recommending one over the other. Comments (21)The gross slope looks good, but you could still have flat spots at the edge. The cracking is probably because you don't have sanded grout, the gaps are too big for unsanded grout. I also worry that I don't see a 2" band of membrane running around the wall. The curve in your shower must have made the overlapping of the band very challenging. Maybe a paint on waterproofing would have been more appropriate?...See MoreCreative Tile Eastern CT
