Hummingbirds showed up once and I haven't seen them since.
Comments (2)Could be several reasons. When did you see one? If it has been recently, the hummers are now in migration and you may see one then not again. Another reason is that flowers are starting to bloom and they are feeding from flowers more often. A third one is that it may not have liked the nectar. The feeder is fine but it is better to make your own. Heat the water. It doesn't have to boil (per a bird bander that has visited my yard) but it has to be warm enough to dissolve the sugar. The ratio is 1 part sugar to 4 parts water. Let it cool and then put it in the feeder. It doesn't need food coloring and there is debate about whether food coloring is harmful or not. Change the water every 3-5 days depending on the temperatures outside. Hummers feed about every 15 -20 minutes but if it has a path if follows, you may not see it at your feeder every time. Once they use the flowers it is also harder to know when they are in your yard. They also eat bugs for protein and you sometimes see them "bugging" around the trees....See MoreI haven't seen this in a really long time!
Comments (12)brook, I used to hear them here all the time, but then several years went by and I heard nothing. Then last year I heard them once or twice. Funny you mention predators.......as I was following one, trying to get its picture, a hawk flew overhead. :( I quickly left the Bobwhite alone. I live in central Indiana. Isn't it strange to find 3 of them now, with a foot of snow on the ground and extremely cold temps? We have 35 acres of land.......a mix of woods and growing up fields. We have tons of big brush piles, so hopefully they've found some shelter in those. I put some dried corn around the areas they seemed to frequent. I have a friend who said she had a bobwhite once that loved greenbeans....See MoreYikes--I haven't seen a snake in a month?
Comments (3)By drought, I meant a drought in sightings rather than dry weather, although dry weather does make snake finding more difficult. It has been hot which also works against finding snakes in abundance. I just need to look after dark. I have seen over 300 snakes this year, just none in the last month. Here are my totals to date: My snake totals so far for 2005: 345 snakes, 20 species [24 subspecies]: 191 Prairie Ringneck Snakes, 26 Common Garter Snakes (25 Eastern/Red-Sided Intergrade, 1 Red-Sided), 23 Lined Snakes, 22 Eastern Yellowbelly Racers, 15 Northern Water Snakes, 12 Milk Snakes (7 Central Plains, 3 Red/Central Plains Intergrade, 2 Red), 9 Midland Brown Snakes, 8 Osage Copperheads, 8 Prairie Rattlesnakes, 8 Western Ribbon Snakes, 6 Great Plains Rat Snakes, 4 Black Rat Snakes, 3 Blotched Water Snakes, 3 Common Kingsnakes (2 Speckled/Desert Intergrade, 1 Speckled), 2 Flatheaded Snakes , 1 Northern Redbelly Snake (red phase), 1 Timber Rattlesnake (Western phase), 1 Eastern Hognose Snake, 1 Western Worm Snake, 1 Western Plains Garter Snake...See MoreHaven't seen anything new at Craft Sales
Comments (6)I skipped this year's big show at our local high school. It's just so horribly busy that you cannot even find a place to park unless you get there at 7:30 am. What I wanted to buy there, I can just buy on line anyway and the weather was terrible. I agree, nothing much but jewelry and I don't have any need or desire to even look at jewelry. I have more than I even wear already and it's all fine jewelry, not costume jewelry. I wear a wedding ring and a watch and that's pretty much it. All those purses they sell are not anything like what I use so that's of no interest. I have an Avon lady already, I have a zillion Scenty waxes, Tupperware is way over priced junk, same with Pampered Chef. Just a bunch of stuff you can buy at any store for much cheaper. I have craft show burn out!...See MoreJanie
