Barn Door Over Wall with Indention

Hello!

We are hoping to install a barn door over our bathroom entry way. The area has a decorative indention (about 3 1/2 inches deep) on both sides which would make the wall uneven for a standard installation. We thought about using wood clock on the part that indents, but are worried that the studs holding the weight.

Does anyone have any recommendations on what we can do to install it?

Barn doors on a bathroom are terrible for privacy too, unless of course, this bathroom is in your master bedroom, so privacy isnt all that important. Honestly though, I would buy another door and case it in that matches the door on the other end of the bathroom.

I have a barn door for my bathroom. I love it! And it saves ALOT of space.

Would you mind posting some photos, so we know exactly what you're talking about?

Without framing the wall flat you are not using a barn door unless you block out for the the track, but in my opinion that will look like ass.

I don't even want to think what is in the crevices around my pocket door, as I've never thought to check it out! As funkycamper said, there is little room for that. Our house, built in 1952, has a pocket door between the kitchen and dining room. In our 37 years here, we've never had an issue with it. It sometimes groans and drags a bit on one side edge a bit when we pull it out, but then I would groan and drag too, if I were 64 years old! Honestly, I have closed it no more than thirty times during our life here. Our outlets and wall switch are on the opposite side of the pocket door, so maybe placement of those items could be a consideration. Best wishes.

"I went to work in an office that had a pocket door that never worked right because someone had driven nails into it at some point and it was never the same after" (palimpsest) Yes. This happened to us when DH nailed the baseboard on the wall between the laundry and kitchen. The door came off track. When we renovate I will replace or remove. However, this was builder grade. On our extension I added three pocket doors. The one I had put in for the powder room is a solid core door, not thinner than most doors, as I wanted as much sound-dampening as possible with such a device. We used Johnson Hardware - not the home depot variety which runs $ 40 or so, but commercial grade. Look at the Johnson site under 1500 Commercial Grade and you will also find non-standard size frames (door max thickness 1 3/4"). Use a good carpenter.

But you have those large windows in the room and you're worried about someone seeing you in PJ's from the front door? The only thing I would do is cover the built in shelves opening with drywall. Would not remove them because I think they are there to support the header for the opening. As well as define the living area space from the entry space. Barn doors. Just No. Totally wrong stylistically. Will scream 'Look at ME'. Won't be a small mistake that you can overlook; barn doors will be a HUGE mistake. Curtains, only if you must because they're a less expensive mistake and an easy one to rectify. I like the 'gun ports'. I do not think I would cover them (but I'm not seeing the whole room and I might change my mind once the shelves are drywalled over). I may like the gun ports because I can look at them and avoid looking at the built-in 'colonial-looking' shelves. Would not install French doors nor a transom. Will just muddle up the look, be in the way because I'm betting that they will remain open 95% of the time, serve no worthwhile purpose, add expense and be something else to clean.

Agree with other posters - I wouldn't do a barn door in this scenario.

Maybe it's my aging eyes, but I don't see an indentation anywhere in your photo. Can't figure out what you're talking about with that.

Barn doors are fine for barns, but not so great for indoors. They intrude into the room, wasting space, and as pointed out above, are pretty dismal for providing the privacy you want in a bathroom.

If you don't want a conventional door, I suggest a pocket door. I'd get rid of that pointless oversize frame, too.

I guess that's what the OP meant. It's not what I'd call an indentation (or the archaic term "indention"), exactly the opposite, but whatever.

Regardless, 3-1/2" is a lot! It's already wasting that 3-1/2" piece of real estate in the room. Adding a barn door will make it stand out another 2" or so more. That just doesn't seem to me like a good use of space, but what do I know?

Theoretically, you could just add a "header" for the barn door that's as thick as the "fat frame" to suspend it from. However, are those walls angled? And you have a protruding "footing" (whatever it's called) at the floor level?

Much as I loooove the barn door on my bathroom—and wouldn't do it any other way—I can't see that you have space considerations that override the complications. If that's your master you could have, uh, a beaded curtain?

And the trim at the base on either side of the opening will require a barn door to be set off from the opening even more than usual. There are many reasons not to do a barn door in this situation, and I'm struggling to find any good reasons in favor of it.

If you're changing flooring, do it now. Frame for a cased door opening or frame for a prehung swing door. I can't think of any good reason to use a barn door in that situation but I can think of a whole bunch of reasons not to.
