What are you storing in the closet?

Clothes? Shoes? Dresses? Suits? Blouses? Other items? The use and location of the closet will inform the design.

What are the measurements from the wall to the door frame?

Assuming this is a clothing closet, here is my basic layout. Install peg board, slat board or hooks on the left wall for small items. Six feet of rods on the right side, from far end towards the door, split into single long hanging section and double rod section for short items. Shallow shelving the depth of the wall for the remaining 18 inches. Put some type of corner shelving or shoe storage in the left corner at the far end.

Love California Closets, but quite expensive!! We have a combination of Pax wardrobes from Ikea and Closetmaid system from Home Depot. I'm offically out of hanging space so am thinking of taking out the dresser to place add'l hanging space on back wall. (DH says I just need to get rid of all the things I don't wear...I guess there's some truth to that! Left side has shelving for sweaters + hang space and right-siis mostly double-hang space + section for dresses etc. (Pic taken before everything got piled back in! Add'l storage hidden in these pics) I keep all casual T-shirts etc in Pax wardrobe in DH closet + space in 2 spare rooms...yes, it's time to re-organize so perhaps this thread will motivate me to do it! I would love to have everything including storage for shoes in 1 spot, but this closet simply isn't large enough! What is lacking in my closet is space for shoes...they are all over the place and something that I would certainly want to address for any 'do-overs'!

Thanks for the feedback! I guess the pegboard idea is not so great? I will investigate rollouts again for the lower 2 shelves; the highest shelf is too high to make a rollout practical, which is why I wanted to use the back of the door. desertsteph I like the idea of mounting something between the shelf fronts and frame; hadn't thought of using that space and that way it won't strain the hinges. Any other thoughts? I'd love to hear!

You really don't have much in there. You could fold and stack it more neatly and maybe eliminate what you don't really want or need. But, as someone else said---close the door. There is not much there to worry about. I think that you like the look of that closet with the baskets, but you would just have to find stuff to fill it up and make it worth buying all the baskets. Why? Fold neatly, close the door! If it makes you happy, go out to Target and buy a few of those canvas or woven baskets and put some stuff in them. You just don't have the space or the excess stuff for that like in the photo. Consider yourself to be ahead in the game of "stuff".

Hi Lisa! There are a few things you can do instead of spending the time and money to re-do the entire space. First, declutter. Anything that does not need to be in that space... (like Spiderman masks, cans of food, and a seat from a car) should be moved to a different area in the home. Only keep items you are using for that particular season in the entryway space. Second, paint goes a long way for making a space look lighter and brighter quickly and affordably. Paint the brown furniture, cubbies and shelving units white to help brighten the space when you walk in. Last, if you know someone handy, you could ask them to add doors to the shelving units. This allows you to hide your mess without having to actually change how you store it. And closing those closets off will help your eyes see a nice white piece of furniture instead of a mess every time you walk into the space. Making it more relaxing. Hope this helps!

We have a closet like this in our guest room/office. Shallow shelves on the right run all the way to the back, and a clothes rod goes across the back wall. Very easy to clutter up with boxes etc on the left, but can’t think of anything better. Kind of thinking of hammering some picture hooks into the wall on the left to hold art work not currently on display elsewhere in the house.

Assuming this closet is for storing clothes, here’s a rough idea of what you can do with an Ikea pax system 40”wide x 14” deep + 20”wide x 14”deep (customizable to suit your needs of course). Hopefully you have at least 14” to the right of the door frame to the wall, otherwise the cabinets will stick out a bit. That will leave 30” of space at the back to allow for hanging clothes. On the back wall you can do double rods and shelves. (unless you have a lot of dresses to hang then just do a single rod.)
