I need an explanation :-) I have never heard of this practice....what's it supposed to do? Encourage good fortune? I could use some of that! Are there requirements on how much, where, etc.? Any other rules to follow?

I have a Jin Chan or Chinese money toad. He has always been positioned according the rules of Feng Shui but I have not noticed that the wealth and abundance he is supposed to ensure has necessarily ever materialized.............. :-(

I will be doing that. It worked for me pretty well in 2019 also.

If I remember right, you put money in a plastic bag (at least that is what I do) (I used a dollar) and you bury it on Dec 31 and then dig it up again on Jan 1. You keep the dollar, don't spend it. When you've accumulated a few bucks, use them for the good of someone else, like leaving for an extra nice tip, something like that. It will bring you unexpected good fortune during the year. It doesn't have to be buried deep. Even a flower pot will do. Just remember to dig it up the next morning.

I also this year put a penny on a windowsill in each room. That is also so supposed to be good financially. My sister used to use dimes. I'm not sure if that helped more or not. :)

Oh no!! I forgot the most important part. When you bury the money, you say "I am burying my poverty, I am burying my misfortune". When you dig it up, you say "I am uncovering my wealth and my good fortune".

I will! We were fortunate this year after burying money. I found $10 in the parking lot at work, $50 on the floor at Dollar Tree, and we came into a nice, unexpected inheritance!

No, but this year was pretty good for me. Sadly partly due to my dad passing away last year and leaving his kids his home. Also for the first time ever our hospital gave RNs an end-of-year bonus. When I saw the notification in my e-mail I thought it was a mistake. Everyone else, who are on the GS pay scale always got them, RNs were on a different one and we weren't included. New director and he changed that.

Next year is starting off to be a good one too, our president gave us a 3.1% raise. Not a fan of his but appreciate the raise.

I haven't heard of burying money. We put out silver dollars on the windowsill before midnight and bring them in after.

Another thing we do is the first food eaten after midnight must be pork.

I'm going to give it a go again. Can't hurt to go into the new year being optomistic right :-)

I've done it for the past several years. I've kept the dug-up money in a baggie and this year I put it in the Salvation Army kettle and used for tips.

I accredit my 'earnings' on my scratch tickets to burying the money. I've gotten over $1800 this year from $3 and the odd $5 tickets.

I also put a penny on the window-sill. Nicole mentioned that tradition. It's still there, and I don't have any more pennies, so I won't do that one this year.

As Murraysmom mentioned you bury your money in the snow, in the dirt, in a flowerpot if the ground is frozen, anywhere you can bury it. And say you are burying your poverty and misfortune. And anytime New Year's Day you dig it up and say you are Uncovering your wealth and good fortune.

You have to keep the money, not spend it, and give it away to charity, as a tip. Not spend it on yourself.

I do it every year, and bury the money in a flower pot.

Nicole, so I don't need to place a new penny every year?? That's a good thing since we (Canada) dispensed with pennies 7 years ago.

I've buried a dollar several years in a row now, and have always been pleased with what I've received. I donate my dollar to the local food pantry, as they also help with utility bills and such.

The penny tradition as I know it: put a penny in each windowsill New Years Eve, heads up, ....so you'll have good fortune.....lots of money....throughout the year. It's a running joke here...my husband teases me about the penny....then tells me IT WORKS!

Yes....I leave it ALL year...and DO NOT change it out next year. The head of the penny is what you can see, sitting straight up. I sit them off the wood windowsill on the edge of the glass(you can use multiple windows, 1 a year in my case). My understanding of this tradition is YOUR money never leaves you, YOUR luck is still with you.

Ah, that explains why when my sister was moving, after having lived in her house for over 20 years, I found dimes on the windowsills that she didn't remember putting there. LOL

I come from a family riddled with superstitious beliefs and never heard this one. My parents said that a silver dollar was cooked into the New Year's Day pork and cabbage, whoever got it would have good luck that year. They also said that whatever you spend your time on New Year's Day you will continue to do all year, therefore get all your drudgery chores done the day before and only do what you enjoy doing and avoid hassles and anxiety at all cost. Then I have an unmarried Uncle who has a female friend that has him to come into her house on New Year's Day and all he has to do is walk around and go into each room before he leaves, it's supposed to bring the woman good luck that year.

Rita weed. I forgot about the first person through the door superstition. An old friend and neighbor of ours use to call my husband new years day to come and walk thru her front door. It was suppose to be good luck to have a tall, dark haired man to be the first person thru the door. Wonder if it will still work since he is now bald. Lol

Stones are believed to have "lucky" properties. Tiger eye is supposed to be "lucky". I like the way they say "may".... I like tiger eye, so ......Quote:

Raven, I remembered that you were the one who introduced me to burying the money a few years back. It must be working, especially this year. I had to start taking mandatory 401k distributions this year and it was more than I anticipated. A lot more, so we used our excess to take a trip to Ireland and Scotland, a trip we had been thinking about anyway.

I meant to add, I had never heard of the penny in the window or the ‘pork and kraut’ food tradition, but sure have heard of the black eyed peas tradition. May be these are regional traditions. I don’t care for kraut (a little in a Reuben is an exception) and don’t eat much pork. DH is from Ohio and he said they never had anything in particular in NY day either. We weren’t that superstitious in my family growing up and just ate anything.

I will be making some black eyed peas from my garden in a broth with greens and a little ham (for DH). It’s become traditional for me.

I didn't make it up myself. I learned about it on another forum I used to be on years ago. From what I have been told it was an ancient tradition in I believe the Vietnamese culture. That could be totally wrong but it was what I was was told. If you Google it there's several references to this tradition.

I got mine buried. This time I left the trowel in the ground so I can find it easily. I'm a slow learner. :)

I buried mine this morning. I didn't say the words out loud as I was burying so to be on the safe side, I opened the back door and said it out loud.

I also just put a penny on the window sill.

I haven't buried mine yet. I need to put a piece of flag stone over the top of it. The soil is so sandy here, the dogs can easily dig it up. Plus if I touch something, that is something they seem to automatically want.

I really had to laugh the other day. I walked out in the hay field which is on the far side of this place. I walked around it to look at some tree that was on the edge of the forest. We back up to the Davy Crockett National forest. The dogs went with me. One dog, Scout, went off on her own. When I got back to the barn, I saw Scout zig zagging all over....following the path I had walked. Nose to the ground. She was tracking me. If she had looked up, she could have seen me. Makes you appreciate what a great nose dogs have. A little unnerving that a dog could smell me like that. :)
