Here is what I just don't understand about annuals
Comments (19)Jamilyian, I just learned something interesting from you! I wasnt aware that Hostas didnt thrive in zone 9. Not that it matters here in zone 6, but it is something that I never knew before. If you have never been to a botanical garden before, be prepared to be overwhelmed!! I live an hour away from the Missouri Botanical Garden in St. Louis, which has an incredible home gardening display garden. Any plant (new or old) that you can think of is there. There are many plants that my eyes just go right over in the books and catalogs, but they are able to bring them to my attention with the creative combinations they do with them. I have been to MANY botanical gardens all over the country (my vacation destinations are determined by which one I want to go to next). I have been to some that arent so great, but I guess that depends upon personal taste. Although I LOVE tropicals, and Hawaii has been my favorite trip of all, I wasnt too inspired by the botanical gardens, simply because I cannot do what they do in their climate, and the plant choices are quite limited it seems. I guess what I mean is, there is little inspiration for anything other than my indoor garden. I remember questioning why there wasnt anymore annual displays, like we have here. Of course, you can find a zillion other things to do in Hawaii and I certainly wasnt dissapointed!!! I could spend a whole week driving that trip to Hana, finding tropicals in the wild that grow like trees, where here they are limited to (at the most) a 12 inch container! Can anyone elaborate more on the Hosta issue she mentioned? I dont understand why it is that they would "die out" and not return. Is it true that they need to "freeze" for a while in order to thrive? Wouldnt there be many species that would do the same thing? I find this very interesting, I never thought that most things would NOT thrive in zone 9. This could be my lesson for the day....See MorePinus yunnanensis
Comments (4)Hi Dax, No idea what the problem is, but you'll never keep it alive in zone 5 anyway! It is at best zone 8, realistically zone 9. Think of it like Pinus elliottii in terms of climate/ecology. Resin...See MoreFigs are failing
Comments (5)Thanks for thoughts, Herman and James - I'm inclined to think it's not *specifically* the pine bark though the ones with higher pine bark seem more prone to it. The reason I say that is that one of Paradise Nursery's mystery figs (which I didn't re-pot this year) is showing signs of stress out of nowhere, so that means it's not in the same kind of soil mix as the other ones. When I thought about it as carefully as I could, it seemed that the ones that had this, were those which had been under some drought stress within the past week to ten days (in other words, they'd undergone some drying out) and then been rehydrated, but what I can't remember is if I then gave any of these any feeding with a fertilizer solution too quickly after rehydrating, maybe it's a "burn" or maybe it's just heat stress to where they got too dry and some of the leaves didn't bounce back. But that doesn't even seem right to me, either, because of the amount of rain of late (and the one fig isn't buried, so it has good drainage, plus it's in part-shade after the very hottest part of the afternoon). The main thing I want to do is help these figs hold onto what leaves are left and then do what's best by them, by changing soil mix, adding something, moving them to different location, whatever. I'll go to Walmart and look for some pH tester, per Herman's idea - what's the easiest and cheapest method for short-term testing, and does anyone recommend any particular kind of pH meter for longer-term use? (I should really have one anyway, since I have all the potted blueberries and a few potted citrus plants, which are finicky on the "taste" of their soil.) Appreciate you all answering, on and off forum (got some encouragement and ideas emailed to me, too). Sherry...See MoreFavorite items taken off the shelves!
Comments (47)What I found is stores get to decide what items to put on their shelves and sell and some stores if plenty of same ones, will have different items at the different stores. LIke I was talking to the guy that brings the munchies and asked why there isn't same everyone and he said some stores have very little space for them to go on and others have a whole side of the aisle they use and they decide what sells or they want too. But what I don't like is they are all now pushing their name brands of their stores they want you to buy and so are drugstores and I have lost favourites like its really hard finding latex free bandaids I love to use and so when I see I grab and load up. You need to do that nowadays, if you like anything, grab it and load up if you can afford to do that and find space for them to go in. Like so many items, have shrunk too and wish I had loaded up huge time for more items like toilet paper, kleenexes, they are all changed and shrunk but not as good I find many of them are now. Even items I noticed baggies, bought some needed and went what? This is so small now and need the other baggies to fit items in to freeze up. They leave you with alot of times their garbage on shelves they demand you to buy. I have tried one of our stores brands and ugh it went straight thrown out, didn't care how cheap if its non eatable not worth it. I hate the bars of soaps they have out now, I buy the sensitive skin baby dove bars and I find the scum that comes off them and leaves my hands terrible shape and its awful, my sink feels terrible and all I do is wash my hands and I am like this is unreal and what is it doing to us then. Even the dishsoap too is same and don't like it, they seem to be giving us worse and worse things to use and bad for us too. I bought a fan in the summer and unreal how short it lasted, that is really bad, used to buy things like that, that lasted forever for us to use for years to come. kathy...See Morelaceyvail 6A, WV
