Red cabbage was disappointing

We wanted a different side dish than our usuals, and I remembered that my grandmother's best friend always brought a cooked red cabbage sweet/sour dish that I loved as a child.

I looked up a couple of recipes on line and made one that sounded right - cabbage, apple, onion, brown sugar, red wine vinegar, orange zest & juice, salt & pepper. It called for lingonberry jam, which I didn't have, so I added cranberries also. No caraway, as I don't remember that flavor being in it.

It was okay, but just didn't really have the zip that I hoped for.

Do you make this dish? Do you have a favorite recipe? Can you suggest a way to improve mine by adding something? I've got lots left over!
