The day after Christmas...

We will be celebrating Christmas with our family today. Yesterday (Christmas) we stayed home except for a when we went to DD's to see what Santa brought the girls. Everyone will be coming here today. DS's family will stay overnight and tomorrow he and his wife will go see a movie ( a gift from his sister) while we watch the kids. DD is coming to help with the children.

DH gave me some nice quilting items. Can't wait to get back to my sewing room to play with them. Did you get quilting gifts?

It was a very quiet day yesterday, company will come Sat. So I spent some time at the machine. The Merry Mayhem New Year's Day mystery got started. My sister and I will do it this year. First clue, fabric and cutting directions were out earlier in the month and step two came out yesterday. It looks like it will be just 3” inch squares and HSTs, but I am sure the placement will create something nice. So today will be HST day.

I'm working today. :( Yesterday was the first Christmas ever that DH & I didn't have plans. I cooked a turkey roast and we just had a quiet day at home. I worked on two sewing projects.

Tomorrow night we're having dinner with DH's sister and husband and daughter.

Bought some after X'mas & after New Year's plants and bulbs. Got a few holiday zygocactus 9cm for $1 each at Lowes; a big variety of individually bagged bearded iris bulbs for 50% off at Orchard Supply Hardware; amaryllis bulb kit & paperwhite bulbs at Target 50% to 75% off. Also bought a bunch of nice planters and pots 50% off at Target.

I hosted a large-ish family group yesterday and also kept life low key today. Went to Pilates this morning, then came home and after a nice long chat with my daughter we put away most of the dishes and serving pieces from yesterday. Snacked on some leftovers, finished the last 2 episodes of Orange is the New Black which I just discovered, then more leftovers for dinner, and now off to read a bit then early to bed. No shopping, no maniacal clean up, not much except relaxing! I won't say I resent it, because I do it every year, but sometimes I do think that since in my family there are only 2 of us (stepmother and me) who always put on these major holiday gatherings-boy, does everyone else get off easy! I had about 20 family members here yesterday and although I did appreciate several of the guests who pitched in to help, as hostess it was just an incredibly busy and hectic and intense experience to manage it all. In a debriefing call tonight, my stepmother, who is a retired professor of occupational therapy and thus very tuned in to effective work systems, commented that in a sense, hosting these parties is almost like turning your home into a restaurant...except there isn't a staff! Since I always think that somehow if I planned things right I would be able to effortlessly run these shindigs, this perspective really made me feel better about how exhausting it always is. After all, if I had a hostess to get everyone greeted and seated, and chefs to get all the food prepped, cooked and plated, and waiters to help take out and bring back the food and beverages, and dishwashers to clean it all up,...life would be ever so much easier wouldn't it?! Ah well, it was a very nice gathering and I've still got tomorrow and all of next week for me time. Which I *will* be taking, thankyouverymuch. Might go see The Wolf of Wall Street tomorrow and American Hustle is on the agenda too. Some shopping once the stores calm down a bit. Some reading, some relaxing, can't wait for my holiday to really kick in! Ann

What do you buy the day after Christmas?

I buy quite a lot in the sales, but I pick out what I feel are the best items at the biggest discounts and I spend very little. I mostly look for items that will be inevitably useful, things like clothing and some household items as well as long lasting foods. January is also a good time for ebay shopping. There are less buyers I find as people are shopped-out and many can't afford to buy more anyway. The average price which items reach at this time of year is lower from what I've seen. Wrapping paper is another item I always buy for next year. The difference is significant, I bought three rolls for Â£0.98 in total, although each would have cost Â£2.99. I also pick up gift items on big sales. Non-festive ones will be useful as presents through the next year and everything left over will be great as a present next Christmas. It's quite nice when everyone else is running around at the last minute buying presents and I can simply pull out a box of excellent low priced gifts from the cupboard. I'm going to be smug for a moment ;) But, seriously, it is a sanity saver and a money saver. It also leaves me with a lot more time to enjoy Christmas and when those big sales come in January I'm not worn out with shopping and wanting to stay home instead.

Angel: Are you looking for something specific? Like Christmas decorations or winter sweaters or boots? Or are you just looking to see what's out there marked down? Cuz if it's the latter, here's this money-saving tip: Just don't look! I feel justified in saying this cuz I have two store merchandise credits burning a hole in my purse. I went to the stores a few days ago, wandered the aisles and saw nothing I needed! It's a good feeling. Trust me. I figure that I'll make one more trip in a couple of weeks or so and that if I don't see anything I want or need (and believe me, that "want" bar is pretty high now!), I'll buy some blankets and donate them.

We celebrated Christmas Eve with 15 other family members including new-born baby Zeke. Yesterday was the 39th annual Christmas movie. We started this tradition in 1981. Today we left for Palm Desert, CA, and are currently tucked into our hotel room in Olathe, KS, for the night. We’re taking it easy, driving only about 6-7 hours per day. That’s enough for us old retirees. Elk City, OK, tomorrow night.

Sounds pretty low key for everyone except you, Lois. Big gathering that was! Safe travels to you. My Christmas day was very quiet with hubby, son and his girlfriend. My daughter is in Chicago with my sister who could not come to my home for Christmas. My daughter traveled to her so that she would not be alone for the holiday...heart of gold that girl of mine has. I did miss her terribly, but glad they were together.

We are spending time in Arizona with our families (staying at my mom's and my MIL lives 2 houses away). We had brunch with MIL, SIL, Mom & DH. Then my brother stopped by between locations - he works security and was covering shifts for guys with families so they could be with their little ones. After he left, my sister, BIL, nephew & his girlfriend and her boys, MIL & SIL came for dinner and gift exchange. Full house. Our son, DIL & Granddaughter come on Sunday so we will do it all over again! It's a busy time, but we love spending it with our family. After our son & his family go back to Colorado on the 3rd, I will get some quilting time since mom is also a quilter!
