I finally remembered a movie quote...

I finally remembered the source of a movie quote that came to mind every time someone asks for help choosing artwork. This thread on the decorating side brought it to mind again, especially Tatts' comment:

"Why are you asking other people to do your shopping for you?

What do you like? Buy that. Done.

Only you can make that choice."

I agree, but didn't want to pile on. But just for the conversations side, this is the video I would have posted. It's the first minute and a half that apply to the discussion. The subject is shopping for clothes, but it applies equally to shopping for art.

To paraphrase for the artwork discussion:

I’m not here to tell you who you are. You’re hinting around about art. That happens to be a very important topic to me, art. Art makes the house; I believe that. You say to me you want to go shopping, you want to buy artwork, but you don’t know what kind. You leave that hanging in the air like I’m going to fill in the blanks. Now that to me is like asking me who you are and I don’t know who you are. I don’t want to know. It’s taken me all my life to find out who I am, and I’m am tired now, you hear what I’m saying?
