Eyebrows For The Aging

I had good ones up to about age 75, then had to supplement with pencil. Three years later...it's not working well. I've dyed my hair for decades. Does anyone here dye her brows? How?

I remember reading a quote from Bill Clinton's mother, someone with very sparse natural brows. She said she might have accomplished great things if only she hadn't had to spend so much time drawing on her eyebrows.

I don't worry about it, but I am older than you. :)

I am a bit younger but have had sparse eyebrows for years, and only recently have started letting the hair on my head go un-dyed.

A few years ago at a nail salon they did dying of eyebrows. I had it done about twice and it was rather helpful. I just couldn't see spending the $ on it. When they did it, it took all of 10 minutes and while it was being done, I was in a panic because it looked a lot thicker and darker. (Think Groucho!!!!). But when they were finished it looked pretty good.

Nowadays, I use a pencil. Not well, but it improves my face.

I really got a kick about the quote you shared from Bill Clinton's mother.

it's possibly the oldest known plucking technique, actually... even older than waxing, and that dates back 4000 years that I know of... there is indeed a 'cat's cradle' technique- there's also a version where the thread is knotted around the hair shaft, and pulled out. I think it's one of those techniques that you're either born into the learning of as a child- or you're never going to pick it up. I'll stick with me tweezers, though... haven't met anyone who can do my brows better than I can.

I used to have Brook Shields eyebrows with the exception they were long and curly and there was no way to tame the curl. I tried vaseline to glue them down and every other thing I could think of. I though that was a big problem. Oh how I wish I had the same problem now. But no, I'm like the rest of you with sparse eyebrows. They are still long, but very sparse. I've tried the pencil thing and I'm not very good at filling them in so I use Avon's eyebrow powder. Not perfect but better than nothing. I can no longer wear contacts so my glasses age me anyway. I think the hysterectomy caused me to loose my eyebrows because it caused me to loose a lot of hair. My hair was fairly thick. It is thin now. It could not possibly be my age because like Lindac and Woodie, I am much too young. BTW Woodie, what is Circle of Beauty?

    eyebrow tattooing?

I had mine done and I don't regret it one bit; yes it looks phony but it does look much better than the crayon. I'll be getting a touchup eventually, the color does fade slightly. As for sagging, I don't think eyebrows sag dramatically, if they went down, the makeup line would just go down a bit, imo. It's a painful process though, and you have a scabby area for at least 7 days, which you have to keep moist with a vaseline type ointment like baccitracin, makes your brows look very dark, until it gradually scabs off.

Have you tried dyeing your eyebrows?

I put the same product on my eyebrows as my hair, but I leave it on just as long. I think your eyebrows should be the same has your hair so I make sure mine are. It says right on the box not to put it on your eye brows. They do not want to be responsible for someone who isn't careful and gets the dye in their eye. The skin is also more sensitive to chemicals around my eyebrows..but a little lotion after takes care of that.

I've just recently joined the eyebrow "craze". I have perfectly dark, bushy eyebrows...and I draw them in, to shape them and darken the skin under them. It's quick.

I DO dye them with hair dye when I change to RED coloring. Just slather some dye on...when dying my hair red....put wax type chap stick on your skin around the eyebrows....or it will dye your skin. That's the trick.

When I have my hair coloured they do take the darkest colour and colour my eyebrows. No charge. I've done it for years.

My mother is 95, I don’t think she has brows at all anymore. Didn’t help that she was blond, so if she does have brows, you can’t see them. She used pencil for years.

I had thick, Brooke Shields dark eyebrows and made the mistake in my 20s of tweezing them too much. Failed to look at myself in a mirror from across the room to note that they were too thin. I have used a few methods successfully. You can buy an eyebrow dyeing kit at any beauty supply for around $25, and it will last for a few years. This is the most satisfactory solution as it is one and done. I also like to touch up eyebrows with a stiff brush and brown eye shadow as it looks natural. Recently I have bought eyebrow makeup in a mascara-like wand. It looks good, but be sure to buy a color that is not too dark. It is like mascara and washes off.

I am heading to my hair appointment In a few minutes, she always tints my brows at no charge.

I use a product like the one sheilajoyce described. It's like mascara for the eyebrows and it looks natural. Since buying it, though, I've been thinking that I might as well use my regular mascara to fill in my eyebrows. I'm not seeing the need for a separate product when the mascara will do the same thing.

I learned of this on this forum: Just For Men Mustache and Beard color. It works great on eyebrows, and I also use it at my temples where I am starting to gray. I use an artist's brush and am able to get the color on hairs on the brow that are invisible. I use the light-to-medium brown. A $7 box will last for months because you need so little of the product.

I have very pale brows. I don’t really care. I don’t wear makeup, but the mention of Groucho made me laugh. One time when my oldest daughter was beginning to notice these things asked if she could pencil mine in. I let her. When she was done I had Groucho brows. It makes me laugh to this day. She was about 8or 9 and my younger daughter was 5 or 6. We all burst out laughing once I saw my reflection

I’ve recently started using a tad of mascara to touch up any white brow hairs that appear.

I use eyelash growth serum on my brows as well as lashes. The brows aren't sparse and still have color.

I bought that mascara type last week and even though I got medium brown it was way too dark. I'll need to get blonde I guess. Mine are still full at the base but more straggly at the end. I don't color my hair so I can't do that.

That was FAST! Thank you all. I'd only try the 'wash-off' stuff myself. I don't trust my eyesight well enough to risk permanent color.

I use 'brown/black' mascara, but my hair is lighter than that. I'll look for the brush-on brow stuff at the drug store for something more like my hair color. If that doesn't work, I'll ask my hairdresser. (I must go to a 'low brow' salon...never saw this done.)

My eyebrows have been nonexistent for several years. So I do use a blonde pencil to add color...not an easy trick with a hand tremor.

kris, I have given tattooed eyebrows a thought but never taken the leap!

I have few eyebrows left and what there are are partly gray the further from my nose they go. I tried dying them ONCE - only ONCE! I looked like George Wallace! Thought they'd never grow out! I find that a good gray eyebrow pencil works well and looks natural. Many of the nail techs at my nail salon do tattooed brows. It's to permanent but I'd be afraid to try it. Frankly at 76, I don't care all that much.

Oh dear. I have to confess to not knowing what my eyebrows look like. I have to put on my glasses to see them and if I have my glasses on they are pretty much obscured. I am pretty sure they are still there though. They feel thick and hairy enough.

Years of tweezing when I was younger has resulted in very sparse eyebrows. I stopped dying my hair 10 years ago. They are about the same salt and pepper as my hair. On occasion I use a Jane Iredale product to define them.

My eyebrow are still dark, and not sparse, but I haven't tweezed them in years. The hair just quit growing back, I guess. I was fanatical about it when I was young.

My SIL had very little eyebrow hair. She bought generic Rogaine and her eyebrow hair grew back. She uses it as recommended to keep her eyebrows.

My eyebrows are blond and I just use a light brown pencil sparingly. IMO dark eyebrows on a blonde doesn't look good.

Here's some eyebrow inspiration from Marlene Dietrich:

I believe her eyebrows were always drawn on.

My sister and brother both have red hair and white eyebrows and lashes. Although I was born blond, I always had dark eyebrows and dark thick eyelashes, which my sister was jealous of, but it was difficult to get her to dye her eyebrows. She did it only once, I think, and she would seldom wear mascara. She did wear glasses, and so I think she thought that was enough.

I have very sparse, pale brows that are no where near the color of my hair, which is now a light-medium brown with a good bit of of gray in front. Someone on a thread here recommended ‘Just for Men’ and I have been using it to dye my brows ever since. I buy the light brown color. I fill in with a long-wear brow pencil in grey by Bobbi Brown. A swivel stick lasts forever. The grey color doesn’t turn orangey on me like the brown colors do and it’s very subtle.

I find that using a brush and powder gives a more natural looking eyebrow. The make-up company NYX makes a great eyebrow powder. They give you two different shades, a little brush, and if you want a more defined line, some eyebrow wax. (I think NYX makes a lot of great products and their prices are less than department store make-up. I love their mineral finishing powder, clear primer, matte make-up and they are one of the few brands that include a lot of matte eyeshadow colors. That frosted shadow looks awful once you have any wrinkles. I don't know why it's so hard to find matte.)

I use NYX eye shadow primer and it really sets my shadow as well as eyeliner. A worthwhile purchase for me. I need to try it on my brows. I have great half-brows, the end half is non-existent, and I have to draw that in with pencil. I use clear mascara to set my brows. I'm happy to know about the other NYX products as well, jupidupi.

I use the brush and shadow stuff for brows from clinique. Seems to work much better than pencil. I still have some hair but it's light and sparse...except for those few wild ones that seem to have a mind of their own and need to be trimmed. Go figure.

I seem to have hit a wild 'hair'! Some great ideas here. Thank you!

I'm not sure what hairs still exist at the outside ends of my brows. A problem with pencil is getting the inner part where there are hairs to match the color on the outer section, where hairs are sparse and I'm mostly drawing on skin.

I see a lot of women on TV who appear to have removed their eyebrows and drawn new ones way above where they were. Instant face lift, huh?

I have mine dyed when I have my hair color done, no extra charge, same as blfenton. However, my brows grow out faster than my hair. My brows are also overplucked from my teenage years. I know some people use mens beard dye on their brows, but I never tried that.

Ded, that is what the ‘Just for Men’ product is for...beards and mustaches. I use an old small eyebrow brush to apply it rather than a big brush that came with the kit. Or you can purchase a cheap one with a fine tip.

I had mine tattooed several years ago and I love them. They were truly sparse and light. I do use the Just For Men Beard about once a month to dye the hairs that are graying. I use an ELF concealer brush and use a cotton swab to dab off any excess before it can stain my skin. 5 minutes is all it takes. A box lasts a long time. Super easy to do and eyebrows really do make a difference.

    72, still use a pencil...

Something to be aware of - loss of the outer third of the eyebrows is a common sign of hypothyroidism.

    Everyone's got PERFECT eyebrows....it's a "fashion statement"..

Several years back a co-worker got eyebrow tattoos and then decided that they were too large, or too dark or something and then had painful, expensive tattoo removal to make them less prominent.

I stood paralyzed in front of the cosmetics display yesterday at CVS. There are too many choices for eyebrows. The 'brush-on' style has a gel ("Lasts 48 Hours!") and something else. Every brand has brush-on-something, with a range of colors, but you have only the color printed on the *box* to go by. I bought...nothing.

I don't think growing more brow hair will help, now that mine are half-grey.

There must be a lot more hypothyroidism than we realized. MOST Senior women I know are missing the ends of their brows.

Yep, I have Hashimotos disease (under active thyroid) and am missing a lot of eyebrow hairs. 1/3 to 1/2 of them. Use Clinique eye brow powder.

I'm going to have to go to a cosmetics counter in a *real store* where one of those young girls with naturally perfect skin will try different colors on my wrinkled face. (My DIL once worked for Estee Lauder in this capacity. She still has perfect skin now -- married 20 years this month.)

For those of you who are afraid to trust your eyes ... or have fidgety fingers ...

... how about doing a deal with a friend, to maybe help one another some, who might be willing, (without, or with minimal browbeating) to work on your brows?

    ole joyful

i do. I dye my eyebrows. Well, the salon does it. it's great. I feel so much better. I would get my hair trimmed, colored, highlighted, etc... but I would have these white wiry eyebrows. Now they get a trim and color as well.

I happened upon this tutorial linked below on YouTube the other day. I quite liked what the presenter said about makeup and the mature skin. I truly like her advice about eyebrows. She does half face with what she doesn't recommend and half face with what she does recommend. Hope this helps.

    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oWadDTNl15A

After watching the tutorial, to try the method, I purchased an inexpensive Revlon ColorStay Brow Kit in 101 Soft Black (my hair is very dark streaked with gray) to use on my brows and for the eyeshadow a Maybelline New York Soft Pearl. I have only tried them one time so far and honestly liked the look much better than what I was doing before with an eyebrow pencil.
