My wife and I visited the Pont du Gard that Annie shows. It is a ancient Roman aqueduct for routing water to the city of Nimes. They pointed out that the upstream end of the support columns are v-shaped, like the prow of a ship, and said that the height to which they were thusly built was based on the Roman engineers' estimate of the highest likely flood that would occur on the river.

Reportedly a few years before we visited there was a massive flood. (You can see the height of the flood by looking at the opposite river bank that was stripped of vegetation up to that height.) The flood was large enough that entire houses were washed off their foundations, and carried downstream. When the houses reached this ancient aqueduct they were smashed to flinders and the time-worn columns stood proudly, stoically, unfazed and unaffected.

So for my time travel day I'd like to imagine bringing that long ago engineer to the present, to see how his work has endured.

Outside - didn't it seem like there was an old stone church and celtic crosses just about everywhere in Ireland?
