replacement for electric wall unit oven and keep gas surface cooktop

Hi everyone
we need to replace a broken electric oven. The surface cooktop is gas and is still working but is also old. The question is given our setup see photo, whether we should just get another electric oven and keep the surface gas burners or cut through the corian and put a one piece oven that includes the cooktop . How difficult would it be to cut the corian so it doesn't look horrible and then install the new oven/cooktop ?

Comments (16)Hi ColorLady, Here are my thoughts on stainless vs glass. Stainless shows fingerprints, water spots, and scratches easily. Yes, you should use a special cleaner on it. Ceramic glass has a special cleaner as well but it's easier to clean up in the event of a spill or boil over. Every stainless cooktop I saw in stores was scratched up so it was a turn off for me. Also I have a stainless fridge and am constantly wiping it down because it smudges. The Electrolux Icon rangetop ($1899) we purchased is a ceramic glass top. When I was looking at cooktops (not rangetops) I liked the GE because it was ceramic on glass. I was more concerned with knob placement that cooktop surface because I use big pans and have read that large pans that extend over the knobs (on a five burner cooktop) have melted the knobs due to their placement on the cooktop. Searching through these forums is a bit intimidating - my budget doesn't allow for the really high end - turns out my floor is going to cost a lot more than I expected. I searched Consumer Reports and they are pretty diligent with mid-range products. The Kenmore Elite 3249(9) $1250 got their best review and it's glass on ceramic. We looked at the Bosch 36", the Thermador XLO, and every mid-range brand. I liked the Kitchen Aid because of knob placement but didn't like that it was stainless and the display was all scratched up. Comments (21)In my last house I had an old gas double oven and a separate gas cooktop. I am a baker first and a cook 2nd. I always had beautiful cakes, cookies, breads etc. When we redid the kitchen I was disappointed not to have the gas double oven option (we were not looking at high end items -- I got GE profile electric double ovens and gas cooktop) At no point during that remodel did I think (or be told) that you can't bake cookies, cakes etc well in gas ovens. Now with this remodel all I am hearing is the difference in baking with gas is sub par if you want to do cakes cookies etc. and it is making me 2nd guess myself even though until the last couple of years I have always had a gas oven. The good news is is that I think the Wolf DF is really ugly and I really like the looks of the 48" AG -- plus it is cheaper -- and I know I can cook well in it -- only thing that is really holding me up is the no self clean -- I am just not an oven cleaner :-(...See MoreCan you use an induction oven cooktop as a work surface?
Comments (21)Salt is hugely abrasive, as well as hard enough to scratch glass. I would take a bit of care not to set pans on top of grains of salt and them move them around. If you had a stainless surround on gas or other type of electric, it would scratch that as well. I would think it's fine to set a hot pan on your induction cooktop, but NOT over the controls. Damage is likely if you put something really hot on the control pad. I usually toss a hotpad on the cooktop before putting something hot on the burner area. I'm probably just being overly careful, but it just seemed like a good idea and I started doing it early on. Sliding a hot glass pan on a glass cooktop might cause scratches. The metal ones, perhaps not. Comments (3)What exists currently is a fire hazard and needs to be changed regardless of anything else that you do. You cannot have wood directly above a cooking zone unless it's at least 30" above it. Overhead venting is always superior to downdraft. Especially if you want to convert to gas. A strong wind right at a gas flame tends to do funny things to it. Like suck it out. Overhead venting captures naturally rising steam, grease, smoke, and odors, and if you can have the correct ductwork added, gets all of those nasty things outside of your home. Because all of that stuff rises upwards and outwards, vent hoods always work better if they are at least 6" larger than the cooktop that they are covering below, If you move to a 36" cooktop, you would ideally have a 42" vent above it. And at least 27" deep. For your wall oven, if you want to replace it, your cabinet needs to be the right size to accept a modern oven size. That standard has become 30" ovens, which usually take at least a 31" cabinet in custom cabinets, and a 33" cabinet in standard dimensioned cabinets. It looks like a 24" oven in maybe a 25" cabinet? You also need to check the spot where the fridge is, and measure it. It too may not be a standard size to work with today's appliance sizes. A regular free standing refrigerator needs 36" of width and 70"-72" of height. I'm also not seeing any drawer stacks in the picture that you posted. Many older cabinets didn't see the usefulness of drawers, so all you got was a single one on top of doors rather than a whole stack of drawers. Are there any roll outs below, or is there just a half shelf? Site built continuous cabinets with no internal divisions? If everything works currently, other than taking down that shelf immediately above the cooktop, I think I would just live with it for as long as it took to accumulate the funding to address the rest of the 30 year old issues that the kitchen has, not just the appliances. One other approach that you may not have considered if you decide to keep the cabinets and just retrofit them is a 48" actual range where the cooktop is, with an actual hood above. That will give you two ovens. Where the oven is located now could be retrofitted by a good cabinet maker to accept a MW on a shelf so that one could get off of the counter. 4 years agoIf you have the 30" I would suggest you get a slide in range. The cook top which originally came with either white or gray grids has seen its best days.
Just make sure there is no problem with door clearance since your cabinets are so very close in that corner. You can even get a double oven if you like. You're not showing us what is above, but you might want to consider a matching hood or new OTR microwave too.
