Beautiful home. You will regret rushing out to buy furniture without doing some planning. I think what you have is called a craftsman home.

Wow! Beautiful craftsman! It will be fun to work with. Right now, start ideabooks here on Houzz for that kind of home, so you'll begin to have an overall goal for the planned re-model. How bad is the hardwood floor? Can you live with it if much is covered with an area rug? Unless you have missing boards to be replaced, you may enjoy it in its natural state for a couple of years. Carpet was never part of these homes, and floors may be in as good a shape as the woodwork looks to be. How filthy could that carpet be? Not good for a playroom floor, IMO. If you have the budget, buy pieces for the style of the home (craftsman or mission.) A sofa and two chairs would be a good start. Generally, paint color is last and selected based on fabrics and textiles in a room. However, a pale sage green can read as neutral and looks nice with that kind of woodwork. You can't go wrong with a warm white either. That would work for now and you can add more color once other things fall into place.

I was able to take some measurements, and included a photo. Any suggestions on where the sofa would look best? If I did the sofa and two chairs, where would the chairs go?

@jck910 thank you for talking me out of rushing to the store! I know I likely wouldn't have been happy with the purchase since I still don't have a good vision for the space

@apple_pie_order There is a large screened in porch on the other side of the window with the white covering (see attached photo). The porch is the front of our house. The previous owners had green cloth-like drapes over the screens to block out the wind (we will remove those once the snow melts).

@decoenthusiaste I've been told the hardwoods under the carpet are in good shape so I definitely plan to rip out the carpet. Unfortunately my husband likes the carpet, so I may have to wait a few years before he'll let me take it out. There are original hardwoods upstairs in a few of the bedrooms and it looks beautiful!! Thanks for the tips on the paint color!

A man who prefers carpet over wood! That's a first for me! Maybe a sofa would work with the cornered TV if it were in front of the window that looks out on the front porch. When you can afford to replace the corner TV cabinet with a regular mission style credenza, then put the TV flat against the larger wall. Is there a fireplace anywhere, like near the stairs?

I live in a 1910 craftsman bungalow, and what you have is a gem. Study the craftsman style before you start making wholesale changes. First rule of an original craftsman is "first do no harm."

Take your time furnishing the place. Rushing out to the sales is a good way to make mistakes and waste money.

Start an ideabook for each room of the space. You don't have to go full on Mission or Stickley with furniture, but I wouldn't go mid century modern either (even though it's my favorite style). Aim for a comfortable transitional look.

hi I am not sure how to start a discussion but I just purchased 2 sofa 1 will sit on right and 1 will sit on far wall under window. I wanted to get a rug (I have saved in my products but do I put 1 or 2 I only purchased 1 coffee table 2 end table. furniture was much darker when I got it delivered so I am doing antique white walls. please help

So many young people are off on midcentury or farmhouse that some of beautiful Mission and Stickley pieces can be had affordably. (Maybe look through images with your husband so he can see how much a part of the warm look of this style features beautiful wood floors.)

Try to avoid impulse purchases and avoid like the plague, what some of us call the big black/brown manatee sofas. Also avoid sectionals. Leather sofas can definitely work with this style, but keep the lines simple while very comfortable for everyone. You have an excellent house--good bones.

The visibility of the TV from the dining room is going to be limited by the wood divider separating the space. Manon Floreat's layout is the best orientation, but you're not going to have the dining area view of the TV. Alternatively, if you and your husband are at all handy, build a windowsill-height long wood shelf entirely across the far window wall. Stain it to match your trim. Put the TV on that and float the sofa.

Out of curiosity, I did a Craigslist search in the NY area, and this wonderful Stickley leather sofa came up--low rolled arms, good proportions, warm color. Do follow the sofa measurements Manon provided. But first use blue tape to mark out any pieces you're considering.

It just occured to me that the room doesn't necessarily need a sofa. You could float several comfortable armchairs arranged around a coffee table. Not this style, but this idea.
