amerec vs mr steam vs thermasol steam shower
Comments (98)I don't understand the last post to this thread? Thermasol offers a 5-year replacement warranty on all their controllers. Why would you pay to replace it? Maybe you had it more than 5 years? If so, then it's too bad it failed but how long do you expect it to last? I doubt you could expect a car to last reliably with no problems longer than 5 years, so why expect that of your steam shower. I have a PRO-395 that I installed 14 months ago. It just failed tonight. Not sure if it is the controller board or the heating element, but it stopped producing steam. Called tech support and they are shipping me a new replacement unit tomorrow and paying for the install, all at no cost. I am going to call them tomorrow to talk to them about the fact that it failed so soon. They are supposedly the best and charge a premium for their product. I am curious how they will explain that it failed so soon. Will update this post if they say anything interesting. Update: Spoke to them this morning and they are sending me a new unit, and pay for installation charge. One other thing. Someone in the tread above talked about making their shower with a 10 ft ceiling. Don't do that! That is just dumb, and will affect the experience of a good steam. If you ever want to make your steam shower bigger, do it in the length or width but never in the height. My house has 10 ft. ceilings, but my shower has a 7.5 ft up to an 8 ft. ceiling and that is plenty high enough. The 7.5 ft part is over the bench so the fact that it is lower there makes no difference because you are sitting down....See MoreLooking for info on building a Steam Shower
Comments (13)Commercial steam showers are on all the time so they have serious humidity pressure issues to contend with. When you tell professionals about your project, tell them its a residential steam shower, going to be turned on for a few hundred hours annually, not thousands. Same thing for web info: this is why nobody will describe it over the web; too many possible problems when someone builds something that is ON all the time Do you really think a Nutone ILFK 200CFM fan can't get rid of the humidity after the steam shower is over? Do you really want to turn it on all during your steam shower? Why not wait a bit since you want steam and not to get rid of it before you finish. Things to think about. It's not as if ten minutes of un-evacuated steam will get into your building's bones and rot it. Far from it. Nobody over the web will tell you what is "just right" for your situation. Comments (60)Honestly, you can get more finishes than you think from the outset if you're willing to put in the time, creativity and legwork. Are you at all handy? We are far from DIY experts and did quite a bit in our first home including installing dentil crown in our living room, changing out lighting and ceiling fans, painting several rooms, painting the walls and floor of the garage and sealing the cracks, and installing beadboard and chair rails in two of the bedrooms. We also shortened some IKEA Billy bookcases so they fit perfectly on a wall in our sitting room. Everyone who saw them thought they were built-in. Just by doing those simple DIY projects ourselves we saved thousands of dollars. Become familiar with when different stores and websites have their major sales and buy things then in advance instead of waiting until you need them. A friend of mine has a master spreadsheet of everything she needs for her build along with dimensions, budget for each and photos of the look she's going for. She cleaned out her attic and garage to store her purchases. Each week she makes the rounds at the local ReStore, Sears Scratch and Dent and other places. She's gotten to know the salespeople so well that some of them will alert her when sales are about to occur or when something comes in that she might like. For example, when the annual Elfa sale occurred she ordered all of her pantry and master closet shelving because she had already designed them online. When IKEA had their kitchen sale she bought cabinets for her laundry room. She found the perfect sideboard to convert into a guest room vanity at a church rummage sale. She can barely still get her car in the garage but her builder is shocked by how much under her allowances she is so far even though she's thus far gotten everything she wanted....See MoreRenovation - should I add a steam shower?
Comments (10)I was also trying to make this decision. Recently I used my sister's steam shower and I did not like it at all (I felt like I couldn't breath and felt claustrophobic). The next day I used her shower without turning on the steam unit, but I did close the transome window. It got nice and streamy in there and I did like that. I think I'll build the walls/door and transome so that the whole shower can be closed, but just not install a steam generator. This is my most recent thought on the subject. Still designing the bathroom....See Morechiflipper
