Help needed - design me a closet system - tricky!
This closest has some recessed space at either end that is hard to access. The closet opening is smaller than the closet, and half the shelving goes into the recessed space. I cannot, for the life of me, keep things organized on the shelves because it’s hard to reach stuff. We are ripping it out on Black Friday and putting in something more functional. It had bifold doors which we just removed. The opening is 4’ and the closet is about 6’ wide, so at least 12” of recessed space at either end. I have to be able to store extra bath towels there since the attached bathroom is tiny. There is good vertical space above the existing wood shelf, but at 5’ tall, I’d have to put rarely used items or my husbands stuff up there. Thanks!!

4 years agoA closet organizer from Home Depot is perfect. It will give you more hanging space with the shelves in the middle. The clothes on hangers are what need to be in the two ends because you can push them around easily. I would add cleats to the wall at the level of the top of the center portion so I could put in another shelf across the whole top.

Comments (13)Yeah, I thought about some kind of pressure test, but from what I could tell, it would have taken some extensive repair work just to put the system back to a loop of some kind worthy of being tested. So, it's too late now anyway. The Base Board is gone. It really was a mess, and if I ever want to, I could always add some clean new radiators or base boards to the rooms that need it. ColorCrazy - the tables' manufacture (in the USA!) said the leaves must be stored flat. That was no problem in the old house. Here's it's been a major issue. CamLan - I'm making my first visit to an Ikea (in Minneapolis) this Saturday. It's a five-hour drive but I'm looking forward to it. Comments (22)I had Elfa installed in our garage, 2 boys closets, pantry, 2 master closets and an understairs utility closet. The total for all of these was not even close to 11K. Maybe 8K total for all. Comments (3)You start a closet design with knowing how much space you need for the stuff you own. Do you have a ton of shoes, alot of long hanging dresses and coats do you share this closet ? All those questions need answers. This is not a huge closet so it needs to be weel thought out.You could do hanging space all along the left wall and across the back with 12” deep storage on the right for shoes , accessories etc. Hanging space needs to be 24” deep to accomodate hangers you could do that on the left and a dresser on the back wall. So think about what needs to go in there to start. I have 90 pairs of shoes that is where my closet design always starts...See More
