Show & Tell Your Fall Decorations: Here's Mine
Comments (65)Geez...you guys are really good!! I'm jealous! I haven't put anything out yet. Our weather is so goofy...one day it's fall...the next day it's summer...and then back to fall again. Evidently, summer will be back again tomorrow! (For joy!) My summer flowers are still too perky to replace. I'm not sure if I should be glad or sad! Actually...confused seems to describe me pretty accurately! My son in-law suggested using Roundup on the flowers, but how do you kill perfectly pretty flowers. Guess I'll have to wait for fall...or just skip to winter! Somehow bright pink impatiens don't seem very Halloweeny! They clash with my pumpkins! lol ~Sandy~...See MoreShow Us Your Landscape/Gardens - A Photo Thread - May 2019
Comments (54)So many pretty pictures. Prairiemoon2, I like that hosta, as well. I think we are all behind on our work. Spring is the time for doing things outside, and Ma Nature is not cooperating. I still have work to do on our little sailboat for the summer, and I can't get to it with this kind of weather! Very frustrating. I'm tired of the continual damp chilly wetness! I love the picture of you oriental poppy bud. I have a poppy the birds planted (in honor of their method of planting I call it my Oriental Poopy--because I'm just that funny and I have two boys) and each year I wonder how many gardeners pull a stray seedling because they so resemble thistles! As for Baptisia, I believe they do have a large taproot, which is why I wanted to start from seed. I've seen some in the store but I'm not keen to buy them. I'd pot up a seedling any day, but I don't like getting mature taproot plants form a nursery. They are supposed to be slooooooowwwwwwww growers, and mine sure did follow that path! I'm am very glad to hear they are tenacious, though! Claire, I don't remember seeing Spanish bluebells before. They go on the "want" list! Very nice! I also have an unnamed lilac in the same color, so I wonder if it is a Charles Joly. Still waiting for the buds to open so I can smell it. It is doing just OK in it's spot. I really need to pile some compost/leaf litter over it for some extra help. It gets plenty of sun, but I've been doing some pruning of very old growth the last couple or years and it still needs more work. Claire, I also want to say something about your "forest." My attitude towards trees and sun made a 180 degree shift last year after reading Ken Druse's book The New Shade Garden. It is really lovely, in my opinion, and was inspiring to me. He has multiple pictures of trees living in the canopy which are normally planted by landscapers in full sun. There is an astoundingly beautiful zen quality of seeing a redbud in the canopy with a few beautifully shaped branches reaching in all directions for the sun. Each bud seems to be highlighted and appreciated, instead of a mass bundle of buds like you see in full sun. I have fallen in love with what happens in the canopy of my tall oaks. It's really changed how I view my shade. I would love to see your natural forest. I'm sure it is just as inspiring! And, on a side note, I have one Aralia 'Sun King' which has obviously been the hotel for some slugs this spring. Finally put out the beer canisters, and boy are the slugs heading for the bar now, thankfully. Poor Aralia....See MoreShow us Your Gardens - A photo thread - December 2019
Comments (7)Lovely snow pictures, NHBabs - that's what New England is supposed to look like in the winter. I see the rhododendron leaves are all curled up in disgust. No snow here and the ground is bare again. This is not unusual for coastal MA and I rely on evergreens, particularly holly, and berries to relieve the relentless brown and black winter view. The winterberry berries are mostly eaten now by the robins. Just a few left and they should go soon. The other day I noticed the robins were gathered on the Ilex crenata shrubs and noshing on those berries. The berries are black so it's not easy to see them - not a problem for birds. The hollies are filling in that corner of the yard nicely. Ilex crenata berries - it helps to squint a little to see them: No one seems to be interested in the Ilex opaca 'Goldie' berries yet. They'll probably last until March or thereabouts. It's hard to see the yellow berries when I photograph the whole tree. I include this picture to show the scale. That tree is getting big! The second one would have been the same size if a major piece of pine hadn't fallen on it a few years ago (it's recovering). A closeup shows the berries well. Cotoneaster and Carolina rose berries are still around. The temperature is about 50 degrees now, no doubt confusing a lot of plants. I have two witch hazels that have developed buds but don't seem to have any intention of flowering yet. Claire - glad not to have to shovel snow but I'd like to see some more consistent weather....See MoreShow your 2020 Christmas Trees / Decorations Here!
Comments (134)You can see a couple on this tree from 2008. LOL I did not put them out for the last few years because we downsized our tree to a skinny tree. Currently, we are also in a rental house while building. I plan to put up a big tree when we move into the new house. I just went to the basement to take a photo of my portion of Christmas balls. I don't know where my eggs are. One is huge and beautiful with The Virgin Mary and baby Jesus! I think my grandmother made it out of a Legg's stocking container. You may be too young to know what those is. LOL Cute story...I was showing my grandchildren a manger scene and my 4 year old granddaughter exclaimed that baby Jesus was asleep on the COUCH!!! And that reminds me of another story that involved my niece. She was about 6 or 7 at the time. We were in church and she was drawing on the church bulletin. I asked to see what she had drawn. It was a picture of a tall building that had the letters HI above it. I asked what it meant and she replied "it's the inn where Jesus was born." Holiday Inn. :)...See MoreRelated Professionals
