How do I outsmart the computer being smart?
Comments (5)So is the new computer you got yesterday a Dell? If so, have you tried calling their customer support? If you need a 'good' number for Dell (an English speaking one on this side of the pond) feel free to send me an email. Oops...I see this thread is nearly a month old. Did you get fixed up yet? Hope so. Sue...See MoreMy brand new computer is no faster than my old one, now what?
Comments (23)thanks, we live on a busy county lake road which is paved, i believe the lines are buried. i know like i said that on the other side of the road they get cable, and our neighbors who live just east of us get it as well, so we are borderline on it all, although i have to say i don't know of anyone who has cable internet, just the tv service ut i could be wrong. Our provider is just a very small town company who sells computers and internet service, phones and phone service, and DirecTv so it isn't a large company that anyone would recognize the name or anything. My mom only lives 15 miles from me and she gets comcast so i need to check on that. i did check on satellite internet last night and didn't think the speed or price was any better than what i have now, and we have issues here with our satellite signal going out in bad weather even though it says it has 99.9 % strength. I have also checked with alltel and verizon in the past, and although their upload speeds sound impressive, the people i know who have their service hate it and have a lot of outages. So basically i just need to call Monday and see what my options are i guess. I appreciate all the advice and help. I am spending my day today researching routers and trying to figure our which one i should get and i am wondering if the transmission speeds noted on these have anything to do with how it will affect my internet speed. i am so tired of reading reviews and specs and need to just make a decision already because i have already spent way too much time on this, but there definitely does not seem to be one that has all good reviews, i just do not want to get something that will slow me down even worse if there is such a thing....See MoreGot the new laptop -- now time to set it up
Comments (13)Thanks everyone. I cleaned the computer (as much as I can right now, will probably remove more later), installed the recommended anti-spyware tools, installed Avast and Firefox, and turned on Windows Defender and Windows FW. Now I'm trying to set up the wireless connection which is giving me trouble. We have a wireless router and the set-up on the laptop is asking me for a security passkey which doesn't seem to be the same as our router password or any other password or security key we've been given. We have a router password. The Router documentation says to provide the SSID and WEP numbers during the set-up, yet it seems to ask only for the WEP. So, I seem to be stalled for the night....See Moregot a new computer.... have some questions...
Comments (5)Give me your old computer, or give it to someone you trust , i wouldnt risk giving a hard drive to the trash without a hammer. I have been using Avast on Vista laptop here as it seems to be the most popular right now... but that could change fast with a new version. Unless you live in a multifamily building its seriously doubtful anyone will want to steal your wifi connection and the connections with your bank and such will be highly encrypted,, no one will be cracking into that quickly in the short amount of time you're going to be using it. Follow proper security recomendations and you'll be fine. New solo browser window for your banking or other secure financials... highly recommended if you have wifi or cable network of any kind ;) And close it and clear cache when youre done,,, unless youre positive all youre sharing is blocked. Public hotspots ,,, Vista has a special public place security feature you can use... great for single stand alone non networked computers in the home too. Wifi is cool and 'nearly' totally secure - it would be unusual for someone to gain access to yours unless you have a crook for a neighbor or a stupid kid. ,, im fixing to unsecure mine now for a few days... if I see someone using it ,, I'll block them if its not one of my freindly neighbors accidentally connected. Not a big deal to me if I know the user. But easily secured so youre the only one that has access without some hacking. Hacking into wifi is a serious crime in most communities. my two pennies anyways.... if you dont have wifi now call your isp before running out and buying something,, they maybe will sell you something cheap,, or give it to you and then support it too if you need help setting it up....See Moremtvhike
