Growing Mel’s Heritage without a support?

weekend gardener

I have a young Mel’s Heritage that I purchased from RPN this spring still in its original container. It’s grown a little and bloomed really well for such a small young rose. I’m trying to decide where to plant it. I’m in the Houston area, zone 9a, where it’s very hot and humid with mild winters. What would happen if I grew it without a support? Would it ever mound on itself and be self-supporting? I’ve seen photos of Lisa’s stunning specimen cascading down a slope, and Jerijen’s gorgeous arch fully covered. If I don’t provide support or tie it, would it just ramble along the ground? If it must be supported, I can grow it against a fence, but what happens in a few years when the fence is replaced? How could it be extracted from Mel’s embrace? Also, it will be partially shaded. Would that reduce its size? Anyone else growing it in a climate similar to mine?
