Barden roses: Siren's Keep, Treasure Trail, Mel's Heritage
Comments (11)Cynthia, thanks for the info on Siren's Keep. I'm glad yours is adjusting well to your yard. I know I'm pushing it by ordering bands in the fall but my plan is to pot them into 1 gallon containers and keep them in a sheltered spot this winter. Usually I plant bands directly into the ground. I've never lost a rose by doing this, even with the tiny bands. But that was in spring or early summer, not fall. So I will play it safe this time. Is it hard to pinch off the buds? I find it to be. Although I know it's for the greater good of the rose, I feel bad to deprive it from blooming. Silly, I suppose. I recently transplanted 6 roses and I have been pinching off the buds, but I really don't want to. :). Good luck with your roses, Shelley...See MorePAUL BARDEN! ARE YOU THERE? This "Mel's" for you.
Comments (45)I have a RP Mel’s Heritage, just in the ground about 7 months but doing well so far. Florida has such diverse soils, dependent upon where in the state you are. I’m in NE FL and very fortunate to be near a river bank, so we have more organic matter in our acidic sand than most. I also pile on the OM at every opportunity. But folks in NW FL can have heavy red clay. I’ve been experimenting with own-root, Fortuniana, Dr. Huey and Multiflora for that reason, because I think, as I’m sure it is in other states and other gardens, it’s really dependent on your own little pocket of soil and your microclimate. So far, everything is performing as expected; own-roots are much slower than F., but more wind-stable. Dr. Huey needs lots of food and seems slow too. Multifloras are in pots, to go in the ground next month, but did better in the heat of the summer in pots than I thought they would. The only way to know for sure is to try it! :-)...See MoreGrowing Mel’s Heritage without a support?
Comments (28)Thank you Dianela and Jeri for your confirmation on Mel's vigor - I'm so happy to hear that! I will proceed to plant him at that spot in front of my fence next spring then. Weekend Gardener, if you are still contemplating on planting your Mel against a fence, maybe having trellises in front of your fence like I described above might work for you as well when the time comes to replace your fence after a few years? We had our fences all replaced last year, so I'm planning way ahead. But based on what I saw last year, anything planted near the posts got badly disturbed as the workers needed to dig up the old posts and the underground concrete that was poured to hold the posts in place. So if you do decide to plant your Mel by a fence, have him in the middle of a fence section to minimize the potential damage later. --Lin...See MoreI ordered Mel’s Heritage
Comments (7)Look at jeri's photos..search Mel's Heritage on the Antique Rose Forum they are really gorgeous. I just got it last year. It is still in a pot and is NOT staying on a trellis opposite of Raspberry Cream Twirl- MH will eat her up lol! I have a lot of room but so many huge shady trees. So its kinda hard to find the optimal sunny spots for some things. I might just put it over next to the pasture- out of reach of the critters....See MoreVaporvac Z6-OhioRiverValley
