Mel's Heritage
Comments (28)Paul, Diane, Kim, and Jeri: Thank you for all the above info. I think, given what I am learning about the details of Mel's Heritage's site/cultural needs, I will place him in another spot when the time comes. I may be sacrificing my beloved Madame Alfred anyway since the time and resources to create a climbing structure aren't panning out at the moment, so planned companion Mel wouldn't have a structure for support either. My arch with Violette seems to be calling for Mel. Perhaps I see a love match in the future. Paul (and others growing Mel and Marianne): I have a couple of questions. One, how does Mel handle pruning? I keep my Violette pruned so she only maxes out at about 9-10 feet each year. With Noisette in Mel's Heritage (I just couldn't resist that pun), is he adverse to my level of pruning? Second, since Marianne has gallica in her heritage, will she take some shade? Thanks so much! Comments (59)Paul, you're probably right. We have TONS of rabbits out here. We also have deer, voles (they make awful holes everywhere come Spring time!!) and almost any other critter you can think of! In the Spring, I'm battling the squirrels that love to eat my tulips. I have since placed chicken wire over the tulips. Once the roses are established they don't seem to bother them, but anything less than say 2-3 feet is usually chewed down to the base! It's frustrating to say the least. I try to place the chicken wire cages on my favorites and hope that they will ignore the rest!!...See MoreMels Heritage zone 5b?
Comments (1)Bumping it in case someone can help. I do know Niptress Mentions it didn’t do well in her zone 5. Most people only rate Mel’s heritage as a zone 6. If you have a very protected maybe you can give it a try. https://www.houzz.com/discussions/4338200/mel-s-heritage...See MoreHow's your Mel's Heritage doing?
Comments (29)"She might get pitched if she doesn't shape up!" You've stated that you're in zone 5, and its been determined that a climate as cold as yours is at the very edge of the range in which 'Mel's Heritage' will grow (beyond its range, actually). Its not going to make a big sprawling climber like it does in warmer zones, so if that is what you're expecting, I suggest you get rid of it now and plant something proven to grow large in a zone 5 climate. I find it odd that a rose with a male named still gets referred to as "she"!...See Morejc_7a_MiddleTN
