Speed Cook oven vs. Convection/Microwave
Comments (29)First I work in a deli and use a high speed commercial Blodgett convection ovens also use induction ranges. I cook at home every Sunday a large enough meal to feed 4 for the week, even though my daughter is as thin as a toothpick my son more then makes up for it (now 6.4" about 240) I've had the advantium for close to 20 years at home, my first was the 120v. It was a nice speed cook, a little weak microwave (only 900w) but general cooking times were much faster then conventional/ convection oven, especially casseroles, lasagna, scalloped potatoes etc... worked great! My oven was the Jenn-air, but I found to be too much to deal with cleaning to use any of the accessories Grilling frying etc, so it was really a waste of money in my new home I just have a convection oven with my Advantium. When I moved I added the Advantium 240v. even faster cooking, 1100w microwave & many more auto selections. I use my toaster oven for pizza, comes out a little better and my toaster oven is also convection so only takes a few minutes longer. The only time I use my lower oven is for holiday cooking turkey, or large roast, but even a roast alone I just use the Advantium in convection, I'll sear in large pot w/shortening, then convection in Advantium. The Advantium will sear but hot oil is faster method, and wont start cooking the meat, also searing gives off a lot a splatter. Same for steaks the splatter not worth it, a mess to clean, I just sear in pan on stove then auto cook in Advantium. I'm about to replace my Advantium (mines getting worn out). I don't think there is ANYTHING out there as flexible as the Advantium!...See MoreThemador Wall Combo vs Viking Steam Convection Oven
Comments (7)Thank you both for your thoughts. I think you are right. Black and stainless look really nice together and the wall oven does go with the cooktop. I am trying not to test my husband's generosity by going overboard and trying to be sensitive to his needs (even if he really NEVER cooks!) because he likes the look of stainless. We have a 25% chance of the Thermador having problems, but I guess that is the chance we can take. The appliance store will fully warranty it for 5 years for $29. It seems like a good compromise to get such a nice unit for the money. I spent the last several days researching lots of brands and just getting a micro/wall oven combo (Bosch, GR profile or Electrolux) is going to be 3k. I almost sprang for it, but it is just hard to justify. I think I am going to just do this and move on to the next decision, like our countertops. We found incredible custom cabinets on Craigslist that were built 3 years ago by a cabinetmaker and removed by the new owners. We only paid $1,500 and they are all wood construction with dovetailed drawers. So this savings is going to allow me to do a really nice remodel for a reasonable $25,000, which in our neighborhood is all we really should spend to keep our investment. Thank you! I am calling with my credit card this morning to just go ahead and buy the Thermador and keep my fingers crossed that it works. :)...See MoreInstead of second oven combination mw/convection
Comments (14)Annab6, I think the interior size of the Miele Speed Oven might be a little small for a family of 4 for everyday cooking. It is perfect for the two of us, though. So look carefully at the interior size for your cooking style. We have another 30 all gas oven/cooktop, so we didn't have to roll the dice on that call. We have only cooked a couple of items in the convection bake mode, but they have come out great and the cooking times were fast, too. The broil mode of the Speed Oven completely eliminates the need for a separate counter top toaster oven, too. It does a perfect job on nachos and open face cheese sandwiches and is very quick to warm up because of the small interior cavity and the 220 volt broiler element. Again, the main issue is whether this 24 inch wide European appliance would be big enough to serve as your everyday oven, but you indicated that you will have another oven as well. The Miele has the cooking capability in spades, but the size may not work for your family on an everyday basis. If you have another US style oven for big roasts, hams, and turkeys, you definitely will not need a separate microwave, so you can can save money, cabinet, and counter space there. Because of all the complaints we saw on the internet about how tough it was to clean the Miele's rough surface stainless interior, before our purchase we went to a cooking demo in Reno and then cleaned the very dirty demonstrator oven's interior ourselves. It was really no problem to get completely clean, even though the oven had obviously not been seriously cleaned in several weeks. With our Miele Steam Oven mounted just below the Speed Oven, we have rarely used the microwave function in the Speed Oven for re-heating anything; the Steam Oven gets that job everytime due to its superior re-heat performance. So far, we have been really using the Speed Oven mostly as a convection baker and as a small and easy to clean broiler. The microwave function is great for heating up a single cup of hot water for tea, though. On a couple of early microwave cooking experiments we did notice that the absence of a turntable in the Speed Oven is just not a problem, as its rough stainless surface does a great job of distributing the microwaves evenly. The absence of the space-robbing interior turntable of most other designs really improves the effective size of the Speed Oven's interior. Those Germans just might be onto something with their rough reflective surfaces......See MoreCan I put an OTR Microwave/Convection Oven over counter instead?
Comments (13)prospect711: Thanks for your reply! I had my eye on the Sharp R-820JS, which is the stainless steel sister of your Sharp! (It sounds like an amazing appliance that pretty much does it all!) I just couldn't figure out how to get the size to work. Having a deeper cabinet is a Very interesting idea! I'm going to show this to DH to see if we can somehow swing it with our Ikea cabinetry. Thanks again! (Love your cabinets and beautiful backsplash!) Luv2Laf: Your photo is Exactly what I wanted it to look like! And right next to the fridge seems like such a perfect spot! If only it had convection too - I was really hoping for a little back up oven to cook and reheat small meals. Hmmm... Thanks so much for your reply, gorgeous photo, and the food for thought! colorfast: Okay, so it seems that the microwave/convection combos, unless they are the very wide OTR type, are pretty deep. I'll stop hunting for one that isn't. (No more wild goose chase!) We were planning on having 15" wide cabinets flanking the fridge on either side as a pantry (floor to almost ceiling height), but, maybe we should make one wider set of cabinets instead, where we can put the microwave/convection oven. I love how you have yours next to a counter. That seems to be an ideal setup to me. As for recessing it into the wall, I think we're out of luck, since the wall backs a stairwell leading to the basement as well as the stairs leading upstairs. I'm not sure that we can mess with that. I will share these ideas with DH. Thank you for your reply!...See Morewdccruise
