Design Dilemma Paint

I cannot choose a paint color

I am trying to refresh the look of my entry. I’ve never cared for the paint because it looks too yellow. I wanted to paint it white but there are so many that I’m confused. I am changing the staircase carpet but I don’t want to pick until I see how the paint looks.

Think of everything that needs to coordinate - the floor tile, the carpet, and the upstairs paint color. You might also want to paint the upstairs walls (visible from the entry/stairs) the same or a coordinating color.

If I were you, I'd pick a carpet for the stairs first, before choosing your paint color.

This was Kris Jenner's house. OK a bit over the top but I think the paint color or something similar could work for your walls. The carpet on the steps either has to be replaced or removed.

Think bolder for such a dynamic space and take down that tapestry from the wall. Probably time to refresh the chandelier also.

I have been considering white oak as well but have mixed feelings on it. In one way it s so busy- in another way it is classic. I love the look of the classic English home and wonder if white oak is a common floor choice for those. Anyway--- it feels really overwhelming to choose the flooring and we have to decide soon. I have been thinking aobut it for mnths! I was almost sure of the yellow birch, but now I am thinking white oka or birch or maple---- the white oak samples I have look really brown and I prefer beige. I need to get some more samples to compare. At one point I said I don't like oak! I even ordered mt stair treads in maple to avoid oak . . . but now I am considering oak flooring. ugh I am confused.

hermustangs, if you'll read the "new to GW" thread below on this page (or if it's left this page by the time you read this, search for it) you'll find explicit instructions on how to post photos; very easy to do. I think you'll get many more responses if you include photos. I'm not good enough with colors personally to try to answer your questions without seeing the rooms. Good luck!

fairytalebaby, I'm so excited for you. I remember your beautiful setting when you posted over on Building a Home. When we picked out paint colors before we had furniture we also stuck to neutral. It's hard enough to choose paint when you have actual materials you are trying to match but without the furniture, neutrals are your friend. As for the ceiling. There is no rule, only personal preference. I was formally a white ceiling kinda gal but the more I looked at new homes and some beautiful shots here on Garden Web, the more I really wanted to try some color. I love it now and can't even imagine going back to white ceilings. I'm a total convert. Some like a 50% cut of their wall color. Some like light gray (like Ellen Kennon's Gustavian Gray) Some like cream. It's totally up to you! Good Luck and can't wait to see what you're picking out for your interior! Beautiful Home! Lindy

It's your office; standing desk and w/multiple displays, it would seem you spend a decent amount of time there. Also good that it looks as tho you do not need a window covering: Good, don't put anything on the window to hide the view [or light]. If it were my space, I wouldn't give two hoots about painting a certain color because of the smallness of the room, nor necessarily care what the existing paint color is. I would paint this room that I use, the color(s) I like. Period. As others have suggested, do consider the ceiling as a paint-able surface, where color can be used. Screw always-white ceilings; I don't buy that premise. Boring, trite and predictable. Not saying white shouldn't be a choice, just that white shouldn't be an assumed choice. Since it IS a small room, and it IS your (private) office [versus guest room or living room], why not consider something crazy, like painting all four walls different colors? I know...outlandish. Or highlighting the window trim, since the outdoor scenery should be made a focal point. As leslie said, why not be facing the view as you work! I just think sometimes it's worth it to step outside of the normal boring box. Make it something un-boring and Fun.

What shade is the white on the cornice? Do you want a white as bright and cool as that appears to be? If yes, you could always start by sampling it and then move on from there. My personal white preference might be BM White Heron BM Chantilly Lace. Softer whites. But you need to sample in YOUR fabulous space https://samplize.com/ Good Luck!

We can only go off the colors in your photos, but here is how your current color scheme appears.

Walls that are too golden, carpet that has a pinkish taupe undertone. Not sure that either are good choices for the current marble flooring.

That is a very expensive job- do it right and hire a professional color consultant as color guidance via pictures just doesnt work
