Kitchen Table and Island Lighting Advice/Help!

Hi!

I’m in the building phase on our home now. Going for an open, clean, airy, and rather beachy feel as we overlook a lake and the outside of our home fits our neighborhood which is very West Indies style villa types.

That being said, I need help choosing some lighting. My kitchen is white shaker style perimeter with Mont Blanc quartzite. All chrome plumbing hardware, white farm sink. The island is 6X8 with the sink in the middle of the 8, and painted a light blue. For that size island would you 2 or 3 hanging pendants? Or does it truly depend on size of the pendant?

Also torn between chandelier type or linear style lighting over my table. The house is one open floor plan- so you see the fireplace which has white shiplap. Table faces living room which has 3 floor to ceiling big open windows overlooking the lake. I’ve been told that if you have a brown wooden table, to steer clear of any type of wooden lighting fixture. True?

Here is my dining table. It is a little darker in the photo, but is the reclaimed wash wood look. Guess I’m wondering what style lighting and what color being its open to the kitchen with chrome and the table is dark.

The number of pendants definitely depends on the size of your pendants, as well as whether you are installing any recessed lighting in the space. Do you have a lighting plan from the builder? Will there be seating at this island? Do you have a floor plan with dimensions to share? I would probably install 2 larger pendants, each flanking the sink, but make sure to install recessed lights so that you light the workspace at the sink.

I’ve been told that if you have a brown wooden table, to steer clear of any type of wooden lighting fixture. True?

I like to mix materials, but I don't think there are any hard and fast rules. Thank you for your input. So I too, do like the beaded chandelier look, but the lighting specialist talked me out of it. She said it remains her more of rustic French farm house type. The ceilings are 11 feet so she talked me out of certain chandeliers and wagon wheel looks.

I will definitely check in to seeing if there is recessed lighting over the sink. I really like the Feiss harrow hanging pendants, but not sure if I would need a 3 or 5 light style with that, of course depending on size of pendant and number I choose.

If you are planning an island then try to make the size that will allow you to have 3.6 feet all around and enjoy what you have to work with. The lighting position can be 12 inch centers from cabinet faces to wash color on the cabinets and bring out detail....try for spacing centered on the cabinets around the perimeter of the room. The lights need to be colors that work with the cabinets to make them look good....over the island you might want bright LED to give maximum work light.....lastly puck type lights under cabinets on the perimeter to make the back splash shine. Inspiration or possible rooms that might be what you are trying to envision. Candice Olson has a book about kitchens and bathrooms you can find online or in the library. She discusses recessed lighting in the kitchens I believe and online on her design site. Good luck.

I do agree with Olychick though - the kitchen is very traditional so I'm not sure you can get away with something leaning so far modern. I don't think you have to go as foofy/ornate as the previous owners did - but I don't think you can do super sleek either. I think you're going to have to try and find some kind of happy medium. Groveraxle always has great suggestions, hopefully she (or someone like her - a pro) will weigh in and help find you something you love, but will also work in the space as it currently exists.
