Teas. I would grow these if I could. E Veyrat Hermanos, Kaiserin Friedrich, Rhodologue jules Gravereaux, Baronne Henrietta de Snoy, the noisette Mme. Alfred Carriere and and for Lucia, Flower Girl, a shrub.

One warning about E Veyrat Hermanos. In some climates, apparently, this is a nice rose-IN SOME CLIMATES. I had it, and it was awful. The plant itself was nice and vigorous but it refused to flower decently, balled all the time, was subject to bugs, etc. The few decent blooms I ever got from it (say4 or 5 max) mainly just looked like typical yellow tea rose, with none of the subtle beauty you see in some photos. I was so, so glad to get rid of it! Also, I think the Baronne may be more a shrub than a climber, but not sure. I could add onto flowers' list: Elie Beauvilain and Florence Bowers' ...

I see all that sunny California lawn, and all I want is to dig it up and plant roses bushes! Sorry!

Flowers And Bart , thank you !! I will look up the teas ! I admit I know nothing of them , I mostly had ignored this category as they were never for my zone . As long as they don’t get too big I can do a couple !

Ben , I have a suspicion that if I start small and bump the beds out gradually I’ll have all my roses and no grass eventually ! Haha he does want to put in a koi pond which I would enjoy immensely so I’ll save him a smidge ;)

I feel like I have exhausted the climbing rose category and am not sure what I want to put on the arbor . Tough descision !! I may go with Colette , I just adore her

I would probably get two Spirit of Freedom's and put it on your arbor by your birdbath, because I have seen this done here in Florida and it is beautiful.... I think you grew Spirit in TN as well.... I don't know if you liked it that well.... but I thought you did..... I would probably get some lavender and put it around the the birdbath... but that is because I just found out there is a lavender that you can grow in south Florida now and I am so excited about it....

And of course I think you should should have some zinnia's somewhere because you grow them so well.

The climbers that you already have I would tack them to the fence ....

Tea-noisettes- Allister Stella Grey, Elie Beauvillain, Gloire de Dijon, Madame Berard, Solfatare, Manchester Guardian Angel, etc.... But Lilyfinch, that's me, and I'd need an awfully big arbor and fence. If I were you, I would look for whatever is healthiest, easy care and reasonably low thorn with two little ones to chase after and care for. But do plant one tea noisette, just for joy- maybe Crepescule?

Ok, I know E. Veyrat H doesn't always have a great reputation, but just look at those flowers. Oh, my goodness!! I'd put up with sprawling, crazy growth and sparse blooms just for one of those. I tried that one and also Kaiserin Friedrich two years ago because they're two of the hardiest, but neither lived through winter. Heartbroken.

Lilyfinch, Kes is right. Roses that don't have issues and can survive without constant pampering would be great choices for you at this point in life.

Another vote for spirit of freedom here. I also remember how amazing your flamenco Rosita was in TN. I got some from Heirloom on sale and I remember you liked her.

Though I'm by no means an expert, I do have the impression that climbing teas tend to have a more lanky growth habit than is typical of a lot of uber-bushy roses like james Galway. They also have relatively sparse leaves,so I'd think they'd be very adapted to growing on an arch. I'm fantasizing a climbing tea on each side, with a clematis inter-grown with each, to add to the impact...

How about surrounding your roses with wild flowers? California poppies come to mind. Plant annual types so you can change them out year after year. You will have a garden that glows from the ground up. Place stepping stone among them so you can still get to your roses.

Florence bowers is good climbing tea and has a nice fragrance. I just got dr rouges this season it is been very floriferous. dr rouges has a different quilled form then most teas though. Another tea I’ve seen is climbing white maman cochet and looked like a good rose.

I planted Florence Bowers on one side of my Mel (which will climb my swing arbor) and White Maman Cochet CL on the other side. Then Mrs BR Cant in front of WMC, and Arcadia Louisiana Tea in front of FB. There are sooo many gorgeous teas to choose from, you really should try a few. :-)

I think Madame Berard would be pretty too. I must add that all of these have been utterly healthy with almost no care all summer. Just a bit of rain & wellwater here and there. Still too tiny to make much of an impression in a photo, but they are in their creep year. :-)

Not sure, but Mrs BRC gets big here, so you’d want to look into her CA size. Gorgeous raspberry-scented pink blooms. :-)

Of my baby climbers, Gloire de dijon(from heirloom) has the prettiest growth and Excellenz von Schubert(Burlington) has the most wonderful perfume scent and drapey canes. Crepescule isn't that exciting so far. I'm kind of annoyed with quicksilver right now because it is so stiff and stabby and hasn't even bloomed yet.
