Comments (3)You might want to go the Rose Hybridizers Forum. The search function there will answer hundreds of the questions you are going to have. In the "almost too cute to be real", the link below takes you to a thread that started there with a search for the id of a rose, and then quickly went into a method for getting the embryo out of a rose seed (you'll even see the two coats that the embryo has to break through to start to grow.) I hope you'll enjoy the read. In answer to your question, some hips have seeds that seldom sprout (see some comments in the link below). Others can sprout years later. I've had hips that drop and retain their reddish exterior color while buried inthe mulch all winter long (Dainty Bess and Tess of the D'Urbervilles come to mind.) Perhaps the real danger to hips on the ground is rodents on the ground. Hungry critters with no respect for roses. Here is a link that might be useful: Can anyone identify this red climber?...See MoreRose Hip Questions
Comments (1)Well, I didn't end up making the spoon sweet with the small batch of hips that I deemed good enough to use- you have to half and seed them all- what a pain! I abandoned mission about 1/3 of the way through seeding them. Instead I made 3 half pints of jelly with apple juice, hips, and about 1" piece of orange peel. I simmered it for over an hour, let it sit overnight, and then strainded it for the juice. It turned out good. I'm still curious about the frost thing though. Also, I saw a recipe here for ginger pear preserves that called for pear liquor- I went to the liquor store (the biggest one in the area) and I couldn't find it- Anyone know a specific name brand? I did find an apple-pear liquor that was about $40 per bottle, and I really don't want to make the recipe that bad... I was thinking that Amaretto or Grand Marnier would be an interesting twist...See Moreseil zone 6b MI
