Portico and front porch design - help!
Comments (1)Follow-up... in case it's not obvious, there will be 6"x6" white squared off pillars coming down from each side of the roof at the bottom of the arch. That 4x4 is just a temporary solution....See MoreFront door questions - to storm or not to storm
Comments (27)Wow, schoolhouse - I wish I knew there were different glass options for the Anderson doors. I wonder now what I have. I paid about $400 for the door through National Lumber. I think I've decided to put the storm door on the front. I really appreciate everyones opinion on this, and all the good ideas and things to consider. I agree oopsie, it's so inviting to walk by someone's house who has the front door open (with the storm closed). My dog will definitely be happy. Once it's installed, I'll post another picture. I'm still waiting for the Baldwin hardware to come in, I don't know what the holdup is. As far as the potted plants - seems there are very few mums left; I may have missed the window. Pumpkins will have to suffice for now. Thanks again!...See Moreneed help with a front door portico
Comments (0)I am remodeling a two story farm house and would like to have a free standing portico over the front door on a 4'x4' thumbprint. There is only 14" between the front door molding and the adjacent window trim and I have wired exterior lighting on either side of the door, therefore no room for support columns. I do have access to the floor rafters for the second story, and was hoping to attach a 6' 4"x4" to the rafter tails (2' attached) and build my portico over that framing. My roof is a 4x12 pitch and was wondering about the ratio for the portico. Thanks for any and all feedback, I will update tomorrow with a picture....See MoreDesign suggestion for portico and front walkway
Comments (11)It's going to be tricky adding a portico with your roof configuration. Better get someone with architectural skills involved to avoid any roof leak potential. The walk layout is fine, but it is too narrow. Widen by minimum 16" to as much as 2'. Widening it with strips of bricks is a way to upgrade its decorative quality, too. The landing at the city walk should be at least as wide as the walk or wider. Cheekwalls there for the steps would be nice....See MoreRosa
