Horse Manure
Comments (11)Find out from your source if it is straight manure or manure as the result of cleaning stalls. If it's from stalls it might help to know what type of bedding they used. I compost the stall leavings of 4 horses. Even though I refer to it as "horse manure" it is really even amounts of manure and pine pellets (that break down to dust with water), plus urine and a bit of hay. I couldn't keep it from heating up if I tried. It starts steaming in the muck bucket sized mounds a couple days out of the stalls before I've made my weekly trip to dump it it my big compost piles. So I'd say if it's six months old and includes bedding it's been cooked already or well on its way. Mine at 6 months is good to go although I have so much of it I usually am working on an older pile. I haven't had any weed problems. Straw and the bigger shavings might take a little longer than mine. Smell seems to be the best indicator. Even though I'll find the occasional horse apple, I can break it open and it's dark and luscious looking and smells clean. I've linked a couple pictures--it's tricky operating a FEL and a camera phone at the same time! ;) (But not as tricky as figuring out how to put pictures in a post!) Comments (18)P.S: For over 15yrs. I played fiddle in a contra dance band! Now I like that weathered barn look. I even tried to find weathered lumber for my folly but decided it was easier to just get treated and wait years for it to turn gray. That is if I ever find someone to finish the thing. Comments (20)Decorate for the house you actually have, not the fantasy house that you don’t have. Notice I didn’t say “Design”. Design for this was a year ago, and didn’t involve anything Tudor. Design is Form. The bones. Your Form is set, and the basic Form is not Tudor. It does have a lot of nice Modern simplicity going for it. Simplicity that would be best served by a single cladding material, however that might be achieved. And a redo of the copper roof to achieve a more modern and simple direction. It’s ornateness is a jarring element against the rather more severeness of the body. Severity in this case is a good style direction. Bringing on late in the game decoration that isn’t at all part of the design form will look even more unnatural and overblown. Like Mario Buatta set loose in Phillip Johnson’s Glass House. Comments (9)I don’t have exact paint colors, but wanted to show some color scheme ideas. Only my opinion, but I’d go in a rustic, mountain, natural, earthy direction. I would also consider dressing up the porch posts, if possible. I love the red trimmed windows: The next two show how you could paint accents with different colors (the turret, etc): This is an earthy gray I like, but I’m not sure how it would look with all of your white windows. Are you planning to paint the garage doors? If they can be changed, I’d go with wood or wood-look. Otherwise, I’d paint them. Looks like you have a spectacular view! I’d want the house to integrate with nature as much as possible....See MoreRelated Professionals
